Politics and Economics BA

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leicester

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how governments make decisions, how economies grow or collapse, and how both shape people’s lives, this degree is the perfect choice. Leicester’s BA Politics and Economics combines two powerful disciplines to help you understand and influence the world — preparing you for careers in government, finance, policy, or international organisations.

 Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Build your foundation
Your first year introduces you to the key principles of both disciplines. You’ll study Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematics for Economics 1 & 2, and Introduction to Politics, giving you a strong grounding in how political institutions work and how economies function. You’ll also explore optional topics that broaden your understanding of political theory and economic behaviour.

Year 2 – Deepen your knowledge
In the second year, you’ll take your skills to the next level by exploring advanced economic theory, political ideologies, and research methods. Modules will help you analyse real-world issues — from public policy decisions to global economic trends — and you’ll have flexibility to tailor your studies through a range of optional modules.

Final Year – Specialise and apply your skills
Your final year is where everything comes together. You’ll choose from a wide selection of advanced modules in politics and economics — such as public policy, global political economy, development economics, or econometrics — and complete an independent dissertation or major research project. This is your chance to apply everything you’ve learned to a topic that excites you.

 Focus Areas

 Learning Outcomes

 Professional Alignment

While the degree isn’t tied to a single professional body, it’s designed to prepare you for careers in government, consultancy, finance, NGOs, and international organisations. You’ll benefit from Leicester’s strong employer links, career development services, and opportunities to gain practical experience throughout your degree.
