Program Overview

The BAEcon Economics is an interdisciplinary degree that combines rigorous economic analysis with insights from other social sciences such as politics, philosophy, and sociology. This structure allows students to develop a holistic understanding of economic issues within broader societal contexts. The program is designed to cultivate critical thinking, analytical skills, and effective communication, preparing graduates for diverse career paths or further academic pursuits.​

Year 1: Foundation

  • Core units in Microeconomics and Macroeconomics
  • Mathematics/Statistics (Introductory or Advanced, based on prior qualifications)
  • Introduction to Social Sciences
  • Optional units from disciplines like Politics, Philosophy, Sociology, and Data Analytics​

Year 2: Specialization

  • Intermediate Microeconomics and Macroeconomics
  • Econometrics or Quantitative Methods
  • Advanced Mathematics and Statistics (if not taken in Year 1)
  • Optional units in areas such as Development Economics, Financial Economics, or Public Policy​

Year 3: Advanced Study

  • No compulsory units; students select from advanced Economics modules
  • Option to undertake an Applied Economics Dissertation
  • Free choice units available from across the university​

Learning and Assessment Methods

The program employs a blend of lectures, tutorials, and seminars to facilitate learning. Assessment methods are designed to promote deep understanding and include:​

  • Examinations​

Each student is assigned an Academic Advisor to guide their academic journey and career planning.​

The University of Manchester is ranked 6th in the UK and within the top 40 globally for Economics, according to the Times Higher Education Ranking by Subject 2024. The department boasts a rich history of excellence, having been home to four Nobel Laureates, including the most recent recipient, Simon Johnson, awarded in 2024 for his research on wealth disparities between nations.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Study Abroad: Students can opt for an international study year in their third year at one of Manchester’s partner universities. An Academic Exchange Advisor helps align the program with academic goals. Upon return, students continue to Year 4, and graduate with a degree titled "with International Study".  Enhances: independence, cross-cultural communication, and a global perspective.
 

Industrial Placement: An optional 9–12 month paid placement year offers full-time work experience in economics-related roles (e.g., finance, consulting, research).
Students apply in Year 1 and are supported by the Careers Service and Professional Experience Team.
Graduates receive a degree titled "with Professional Experience", offering a clear employability advantage.

 

Research and Projects

The program is taught in a research-intensive environment with strong emphasis on project-based assessments.

  • Students work with real datasets in modules like Econometrics.
  • Applied case studies are integrated in units such as Applied Economics.
  • In the final year, students may complete a dissertation—an independent research project on an economic topic.

Through the University Living Lab, students collaborate with external organizations on sustainability projects, often in interdisciplinary teams.

The Ethical Grand Challenges Program offers project-based activities around sustainability, social justice, and workplace ethics, building teamwork, ethics, and social awareness.

Student Societies and Networking

  • BA Economics Society – Manchester’s largest course society. Offers academic talks, career events, and networking across Economics, PPE, and Finance.

  • MUTIS (Manchester University Trading & Investment Society) – One of the UK’s largest finance societies, offering student-managed investment funds, trading simulations, and industry speakers.

  • Manchester Leadership Programme (MLP), which combines academic study on ethics and leadership with community volunteering, earning a leadership certificate.
