Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Study Abroad
Students can opt for an international study year in their third year at one of Manchester’s partner universities. An Academic Exchange Advisor helps tailor the program to align with academic goals. Upon return, students progress to Year 4, and graduates receive a degree title that reflects their international study experience. This opportunity enhances independence, cross-cultural communication, and provides a global perspective.

  • Industrial Placement|
An optional 9–12 month paid placement year allows students to work full-time in roles related to economics. This “sandwich” year provides practical experience, professional networking, and résumé enhancement. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a degree title that acknowledges the industrial experience, giving them a competitive edge in the job market.

  • Research and Projects
Undergraduate economics students at Manchester benefit from a research-intensive learning environment. The curriculum incorporates research-led content and project-based assessments, such as analyzing real datasets in Econometrics or conducting case studies in Applied Economics. In the final year, students may complete a dissertation, a substantial independent research project investigating an economic issue using data or theoretical analysis.

  • Students can also engage in co-curricular opportunities like the University Living Lab, collaborating with external organizations on real-world sustainability projects. These often involve interdisciplinary teams applying economic insight to solve community-based challenges.

  • All undergraduates are encouraged to participate in the Ethical Grand Challenges program, which includes project-based activities around sustainability, social justice, and workplace ethics. This experience strengthens students' teamwork, problem-solving, and sense of social responsibility.

  • Student Societies and Networking
Economics students can join various societies that support experiential learning, leadership development, and career networking. The BA Economics Society is the largest course society and connects students from Economics, PPE, and Finance through academic talks, career events, and social gatherings.

  • Many students also join Manchester University Trading & Investment Society (MUTIS)—one of the UK's largest finance societies—for practical finance experience through a student-managed investment fund, trading simulations, and networking with industry professionals.
