Program Overview

The BAEcon Economics and Politics is an interdisciplinary degree combining rigorous economic analysis with political science. It offers flexibility to specialize in technical economics areas such as econometrics and mathematical economics or to explore applied topics like inequality and climate change. The program emphasizes:​

Year 1: Foundation Year

A common first year across BA(Econ) pathways, allowing flexibility to switch specialisations. Students undertake 120 credits comprising:​

  • 40 credits in Economics (e.g., Microeconomics 1 & 2, Macroeconomics 1 & 2)
  • 20 credits in Mathematics/Statistics (Introductory or Advanced)
  • 10 credits in Social Sciences core unit
  • 40 credits from Social Sciences optional units (e.g., Politics, Philosophy, Sociology, Data Analytics)
  • 10 credits from other optional courses (e.g., Introduction to Mathematical Economics, Economic History)
     

Year 2: Specialization
Students delve deeper into their chosen pathway. For a joint pathway in Economics and Politics, up to 80 credits can be taken in one discipline, with the remaining from the other or other BA(Econ) pathways. Course selections include advanced modules in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and political theory.​
 

Year 3: ​Advanced Study
Continuation of specialized study with options to undertake a 20-credit dissertation under a Politics Supervisor. Students choose a selection of units in each of the two pathways to fulfill credit requirements. Free choice units are also available.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Study Abroad
    Students can opt for an international study year in their third year at one of Manchester’s partner universities. An Academic Exchange Advisor helps tailor the program to align with academic goals. Upon return, students progress to Year 4, and graduates receive a degree title that reflects their international study experience. This opportunity enhances independence, cross-cultural communication, and provides a global perspective.
     
  • Industrial Placement|
    An optional 9–12 month paid placement year allows students to work full-time in roles related to economics. This “sandwich” year provides practical experience, professional networking, and résumé enhancement. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a degree title that acknowledges the industrial experience, giving them a competitive edge in the job market.
     
  • Research and Projects
    Undergraduate economics students at Manchester benefit from a research-intensive learning environment. The curriculum incorporates research-led content and project-based assessments, such as analyzing real datasets in Econometrics or conducting case studies in Applied Economics. In the final year, students may complete a dissertation, a substantial independent research project investigating an economic issue using data or theoretical analysis.
     
  • Students can also engage in co-curricular opportunities like the University Living Lab, collaborating with external organizations on real-world sustainability projects. These often involve interdisciplinary teams applying economic insight to solve community-based challenges.
     
  • All undergraduates are encouraged to participate in the Ethical Grand Challenges program, which includes project-based activities around sustainabilitysocial justice, and workplace ethics. This experience strengthens students' teamworkproblem-solving, and sense of social responsibility.
     
  • Student Societies and Networking
    Economics students can join various societies that support experiential learning, leadership development, and career networking. The BA Economics Society is the largest course society and connects students from Economics, PPE, and Finance through academic talks, career events, and social gatherings.
     
  • Many students also join Manchester University Trading & Investment Society (MUTIS)—one of the UK's largest finance societies—for practical finance experience through a student-managed investment fundtrading simulations, and networking with industry professionals.
     
  • The Manchester Leadership Programme (MLP) combines academic coursework on leadership and ethics with community volunteering, allowing students to earn a certificate recognizing their leadership and social responsibility.
