Program Overview

The BA (Hons) Interior Design at UAL Chelsea College of Arts is a professionally accredited, full-time undergraduate program that emphasizes a user-centered and sustainable approach to interior design. Students engage in multidisciplinary projects, ranging from furniture and product design to large-scale interior proposals for both public and private spaces.

Year 1: Foundations

  • Unit 1: Introduction to Interior Design: Methods and Processes
    Introduction to the course structure, methodologies, and the broader context of interior design.

  • Unit 2: Design Objects
    Exploration of object design, focusing on materials, technical drawings, and model-making.

  • Unit 3: Design Media
    Introduction to tools for mapping, measuring, and experimenting with interior spaces using both digital and physical media.

  • Unit 4: Design Contexts
    Study of the relationship between users and environments, situating design within social and cultural contexts. 

Year 2: Intermediate

  • Unit 5: Collaborative and Collective Practices
    Engagement in collaborative projects to enhance creative strengths and teamwork skills.

  • Unit 6: Interior Practices
    Exploration of various interior design practices, planning processes, and career opportunities within the design sector.

  • Unit 7: Material and Immaterial Practices
    Deepening understanding of design contexts through analysis of space and research methods.Unit 8: Public Sphere Practices
    Designing public interiors through live briefs, focusing on sustainable design proposals and professional studio simulations. 

Year 3: Advanced

  • Unit 9: Professional Futures
    Preparation for industry or further education, reflecting on skills and showcasing outcomes.

  • Unit 10: Programme Research
    Conducting research and testing to develop initial ideas for the final project.

  • Unit 11: Programme Proposal
    Development and presentation of a comprehensive interior design proposal, culminating in the College show. 

Optional Diploma Between Years 2 and 3

  • Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS): Opportunity to undertake a minimum 100-day industry placement, gaining practical experience.Diploma in Creative Computing: Year-long program to develop skills in creative computing, enhancing the BA degree.
