Program Overview

If you’re passionate about global issues and want to understand how decisions on the world stage are made, Cardiff’s BA International Relations is the perfect choice. This degree explores the forces shaping our world — from diplomacy and security to climate change and global inequality — and equips you with the knowledge and analytical skills to make sense of international affairs and influence them.

Curriculum Structure

Year One

Your first year builds a strong foundation in how politics and international relations work. You’ll study key modules such as Histories and Texts in International Relations, Comparative Government and Politics, and Introduction to Political Thought, which will introduce you to core ideas, political systems, and the evolution of global relations. Alongside these, you’ll start developing the research and analytical skills essential for deeper study.

Year Two

In your second year, you’ll dive deeper into the theories and structures that underpin global politics. Core modules like International Relations Theories and Governing the UK strengthen your understanding of how states and institutions operate. You’ll also tailor your studies with optional modules in areas such as foreign policy, security studies, regional politics, or international law, giving you the flexibility to focus on the topics that matter most to you.

Year Three

Your final year is where everything comes together. You’ll work on an independent dissertation or major research project on a topic you’re passionate about, applying everything you’ve learned. Alongside this, you’ll choose four specialist modules that allow you to deepen your expertise in key areas of international relations and prepare for the next stage of your career or further study.

  • Take part in simulated learning exercises such as policy-making projects or Model UN-style activities that mirror real-world decision-making.

  • Experience politics firsthand through study visits to institutions like Westminster, offering you valuable insights into how political systems function in practice.

  • Work on group projects and interactive seminars where you debate current global issues, develop arguments, and collaborate on policy solutions.

  • Access Cardiff’s extensive digital libraries and research databases, supporting your research with leading academic journals, policy papers, and international datasets.
