3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re fascinated by global events, international conflicts, and the forces that shape our world, Queen Mary’s BA in International Relations is a perfect choice. This degree helps you explore how states, organisations, and societies interact on the world stage, while giving you the analytical and communication skills that employers value.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year lays the foundations. You’ll get to grips with the big ideas that define politics and international relations through modules like Thinking Politically, Introduction to International Relations, and Politics in Action. You’ll also broaden your perspective with options such as Global Histories or Background to British Politics.
Year 2
In the second year, you’ll sharpen your skills and dive deeper into international debates. Core modules like International Relations Theory and Introduction to Social Science Methodologies introduce you to the “toolkit” of a political scientist. Alongside this, you’ll have the freedom to tailor your learning — from exploring Politics of International Law and Global Theory to tackling themes like Gender and Feminisms in World Politics or Power in Global Governance.
Year 3 (or Year 4 with a Year Abroad)
Your final year is where it all comes together. You’ll write your own Dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about, guided by expert staff, and choose from specialist modules such as Environmental Politics, Migration and the Politics of Belonging, Global Ethics, or Politics of South Asia. If you opt for a Year Abroad, you’ll study at a partner university overseas and return to complete your final year in London.
Focus areas
Global conflict and cooperation, security and law, globalisation and development, colonialism and power, gender and identity in world politics, regional studies (Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas), research theory and methods.
Learning outcomes
By the time you graduate, you’ll have a critical understanding of international systems and theories, the ability to analyse global challenges, strong research skills (quantitative, qualitative, and creative), and the confidence to present well-reasoned arguments in writing and discussion.
Professional alignment
While not tied to a specific external accreditation, this degree is delivered by the highly regarded School of Politics and International Relations. You’ll benefit from Queen Mary’s strong connections with policy experts, government, think tanks, and NGOs, and you’ll be encouraged to take advantage of internships, public debates, and careers support services throughout your degree.
