International Relations, BA (Hons) With a Year Abroad

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Swansea University

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how the world works — why countries cooperate or clash, how organisations like the UN make decisions, and how issues like human rights, security, and globalisation shape our future — this degree is a great fit. The BA (Hons) International Relations with a Year Abroad at Swansea University combines theory with real-world experience, giving you the chance to study overseas and graduate with a truly international perspective.

Curriculum structure

Year 1

Your first year is about building strong foundations. You’ll explore the big ideas in Introduction to International Relations and Introduction to Politics, and look at real-world issues in War and Peace in the Nuclear Age. Optional choices like Living Well and Doing Good – An Introduction to Ethics or Europe of Extremes let you branch out and discover what sparks your interest most.

Year 2

In your second year you dig deeper. Core modules such as Anarchy and Order: Theories in International Relations and Globalisation challenge you to think about how power, cooperation, and conflict work on the global stage. Then you can tailor your studies with options like International Security or Global Justice and Human Rights, so you start shaping your own academic path.

Year Abroad

This is where the degree really stands out. You’ll spend a year studying at a partner university overseas — whether in Europe, North America, or further afield. It’s a chance to experience another culture, boost your CV, maybe learn a new language, and come back with a global outlook that employers really value.

Final Year

In your last year you’ll bring it all together. You’ll develop advanced research skills through Researching Politics 1 & 2, and either take on a Dissertation or explore real-world policy in the Senedd Cymru / Welsh Parliament module. With options like Global Environmental Politics or Capitalism and Justice, you get the freedom to focus on issues you care most about before stepping into your career.

Focus areas

“International systems and theory; globalisation and security; human rights and justice; conflict and cooperation; political institutions; research and critical thinking; cross-cultural experience”

Learning outcomes

“Graduate with a critical understanding of global politics, the ability to analyse complex international issues, strong research and communication skills, and first-hand international experience from your year abroad.”

Professional alignment

Although not tied to a single accrediting body, this course is built with employability in mind. From the Year Abroad to internship opportunities (like working with the Welsh Parliament), you’ll graduate with practical experience and the transferable skills employers look for.

Reputation

Swansea is consistently recognised for its strong teaching and student satisfaction. The subject ranks in the UK Top 25 overall (Guardian University Guide 2026), and Swansea is in the QS World Top 250 for Politics and International Studies. Students also rate it highly for teaching quality and having their voices heard in the National Student Survey.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Swansea, studying International Relations with a Year Abroad isn’t just about books and theory — you’ll be out in the real world, testing your knowledge and gaining the kind of experience that makes your CV stand out. Whether it’s debating global issues, spending a year overseas, or working directly with politicians, the programme is built to give you both confidence and practical skills.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • In your first year, you’ll have the chance to apply for a highly competitive internship with the Welsh Parliament (Senedd Cymru), where you spend one day a week working alongside an elected member — a rare opportunity to see politics in action while you study.

  • In your final year, you can take the Welsh Assembly Placement Scheme, giving you extended hands-on experience in governance and policymaking.

  • You’ll also get the chance to study abroad for a semester or a full year in places like Hong Kong, Singapore, or the USA — immersing yourself in another political culture while continuing your degree.

  • The British Parliamentary Studies module takes you directly into the world of UK politics, co-taught with Members of Parliament and including a visit to the House of Commons.

  • Swansea’s Employability Academy and the Swansea Paid Internship Network (SPIN) are there to help you secure internships, placements, and even paid roles during your degree.

  • Regular guest lectures and workshops bring in diplomats, policymakers, and NGO leaders, so you learn directly from professionals in the field.

  • On the academic side, Swansea’s dedicated subject librarians and digital research tools will help you sharpen your independent study and dissertation skills — crucial for both academic and career success.

Progression & Future Opportunities

This degree sets you up for careers where global awareness, critical thinking, and policy expertise really matter. Many Swansea graduates go on to roles such as policy analyst, international officer or diplomat, NGO or humanitarian project coordinator, and communications or public affairs specialist. Because the course includes real-world experiences like placements and a year abroad, you’ll leave with much more than theory — you’ll have practical skills and experiences that employers recognise.

Here’s how Swansea supports your next step:

  • You’ll get tailored career support through the Careers and Employability Team — everything from one-to-one guidance to employer networking events and interview coaching.

  • The Swansea Paid Internship Network (SPIN) helps you secure paid internships during your studies, giving you valuable professional experience before you graduate.

  • Graduates from this subject area do really well after university — 92% are in work or further study within 15 months (HESA data).

  • Unique opportunities like the Welsh Parliament placement or the British Parliamentary Studies module (co-taught with MPs and including a visit to Westminster) give you a standout edge in politics-related careers.

  • Typical graduate destinations include government, international organisations, NGOs, journalism, education, law, and diplomatic services.

Further Academic Progression:
If you’d like to keep going after your BA, many graduates stay on for a master’s in areas like International Relations, Diplomacy, Development Studies, International Law, or Global Security. Others move into research degrees (MPhil/PhD) if they’re drawn to policy research or academic careers.
