International Politics and Modern Languages BA (Hons)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bath

Program Overview

This degree gives you the best of both worlds: you’ll explore how international politics shapes our lives today while also becoming fluent in a modern foreign language. It’s a great choice if you’re curious about global issues, enjoy debate and discussion, and want the confidence to live, study, or work abroad.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
Your first year sets the foundation. In politics, you’ll cover Politics: Key Concepts and Analysis and Introduction to International Relations, where you’ll learn how countries interact and how big global decisions are made. At the same time, you’ll take language classes like Language and Society and begin exploring culture and history through modules such as France and the Revolution(s): 1789 to May 1968 (if you take French). By the end of the year, you’ll have both a political lens and language skills to build on.

Year 2
Now you go deeper. You’ll sharpen your research abilities in Qualitative and Quantitative Methods and examine global challenges in Peace, Conflict and International Security. Alongside, you’ll improve your language with Language in Context and explore politics, culture, or society in the countries connected to your chosen language — for example, Francophone Politics and Culture for French students. This year helps you make connections between political theory and the cultural context of your language.

Year 3
This is your adventure year abroad. You’ll either study at a partner university, work in a professional placement, or become a language assistant in a school. Immersed in the culture, you’ll dramatically improve your fluency, gain independence, and experience life in another country. This year often ends up being a personal and professional highlight of the degree.

Year 4
Your final year ties everything together. You’ll work on a major Dissertation in politics on a topic that excites you, take advanced language modules such as Advanced Language 3, and choose optional units to specialise further. This year is about honing your expertise, showcasing your language mastery, and setting yourself up for your next step after graduation.

Some of the key experiential opportunities include:

  • Dissertation in Politics: In your final year, you’ll undertake a substantial independent research project, giving you the chance to explore a topic you’re passionate about and develop advanced analytical and writing skills.

  • Language Learning Facilities: Access audio-visual materials, authentic texts, and interactive exercises to practise listening, speaking, and understanding the culture behind the language — much like living in a native-speaking environment.
