4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
At Essex, the BA International Relations and Modern Languages gives you the best of both worlds: you’ll explore the big issues shaping global politics while becoming fluent in one (or even two) languages. It’s a great fit if you want to understand how countries interact, and also gain the language and cultural knowledge to work confidently across borders.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year sets the foundations. You’ll dive into core topics in International Relations and Comparative Political Systems, learning how states make decisions and how global institutions operate. At the same time, you’ll begin your chosen language (such as French, Spanish, German or Mandarin), focusing on grammar, vocabulary and everyday conversation to get you speaking with confidence.
Year 2
In second year, you’ll go deeper into both strands. Politics modules might cover Foreign Policy or European Integration, helping you understand how countries cooperate or clash in real-world settings. On the language side, you’ll progress into advanced classes—translation, culture, and debate—building the fluency and cultural awareness that make your skills stand out.
Year 3
Most students spend this year abroad, fully immersed in the language and culture. Whether you’re studying at a partner university or gaining work experience, this is where your language learning really takes off. You’ll also have the chance to link your international experience back to what you’ve studied in politics, making your learning more applied and personal.
Year 4
Back at Essex for your final year, you’ll pull everything together. You’ll complete a dissertation or research project—choosing a topic that excites you, often blending language and international relations. Alongside this, you’ll take specialist modules in areas such as International Law or Political Economy, and bring your language skills to near-native mastery.
Focus areas: international relations, global politics, comparative systems, foreign policy, security, trade, multilingual and intercultural competence
Learning outcomes: analyse conflict and cooperation, apply theory to real-world politics, communicate fluently in at least one foreign language, connect regional knowledge with global issues
Professional alignment: This program doesn’t have a specific professional accreditation, but it’s designed to equip you with internationally relevant skills and cross-cultural expertise.
Reputation: Essex is recognised globally for politics and international studies, featuring in QS subject rankings. According to DiscoverUni, 78% of Essex politics graduates are in work or further study within 15 months, with average earnings of around £27,000.
At Essex, your degree is about much more than lectures and essays — you’ll actually live what you study. You’ll practise your chosen language in real conversations, work with classmates on international relations projects, and even spend a year abroad to experience politics and culture first-hand. To support this, the University gives you access to specialist labs, digital tools, and a library full of international resources that help turn theory into practice.
Here are some of the ways you’ll learn by doing:
Collaborative projects in International Relations modules, where you’ll investigate real-world issues like conflict, global security, or diplomacy alongside your peers.
Language labs and multimedia platforms that let you practise speaking, listening, translation, subtitling, and even interpreting — so your classroom learning feels like the real thing.
A compulsory year abroad, where you’ll live, study, and immerse yourself in the culture of your chosen language, gaining authentic fluency and cultural insight.
An intensive summer course overseas, fully funded by Essex if you start a language from scratch, giving you an early boost in confidence and ability.
Access to the Albert Sloman Library, packed with international collections, foreign-language media, and global affairs journals that make your research richer and more up-to-date.
When you graduate from Essex, you’ll leave with more than a degree — you’ll have the language skills, political insight, and international outlook that employers really value. Many of our students go on to careers as diplomats, policy analysts, international development officers, or media and communications specialists, working across governments, NGOs, and global companies.
Here’s what that journey looks like with Essex behind you:
Career support that’s personal: The Careers Service runs one-to-one advice sessions, employer networking events, workshops on CVs and interviews, and even a mentoring scheme where graduates help guide you.
Strong outcomes: 91% of Essex politics graduates are in work or further study within 15 months, with average salaries around £26,500 at that stage.
International connections: With over 150 partner universities worldwide and opportunities for placements and internships, you’ll be well connected to organisations across Europe, Asia, and beyond.
Skills that stand out: While this degree doesn’t tie you to one professional accreditation, combining political analysis with fluency in another language makes you uniquely competitive in fields like diplomacy, NGOs, global business, and education.
Graduate destinations: Alumni have built careers as teachers, translators, journalists, civil servants, and international business specialists.
