4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you're someone who constantly wonders “Why do governments make certain decisions?” or “How do global conflicts, elections, or international organisations actually work?” — this degree is built for you. The course blends political science with real-world international issues, helping you understand power, diplomacy, policy-making, and how they shape everyday life.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1 – Your Foundation in Politics and Global Affairs
You’ll start by building a solid base in key subjects like Introduction to Politics and Introduction to International Relations, where you'll explore how governments function and how countries interact on the global stage. Modules like Contemporary Topics in International Relations and Authority and Morality help you learn not just political facts, but why decisions are made and who holds the power to make them.
Year 2 – Theory Meets Real-World Issues
In your second year, you move into deeper political thinking. You’ll study International Relations: Theories and Approaches and Conflict Analysis, exploring concepts like war, peace, power struggles, and global alliances. You’ll also get to choose optional modules—such as political economy, global security, or comparative politics—allowing you to tailor your degree to your interests.
Placement Year – Learn Beyond the Classroom
Instead of jumping straight into the final year, you spend a full year working in a real organisation (government office, NGO, political consultancy, media platform, etc.). This placement isn’t just “work experience”—it helps you apply your political knowledge in real situations, build your CV, and gain professional confidence.
Final Year – Specialisation and Independent Thinking
You return to campus ready to think more critically and independently. This year is about choosing specialist modules and producing a research project/dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about—like human rights, elections, diplomacy, foreign policy, or international conflict.
Focus Areas (string format)
Political systems, diplomacy, international relations theory, conflict and peace, global governance, policy-making, political analysis, and ethical decision-making.
Learning Outcomes (string format)
Strong understanding of political and international systems; ability to analyse real-world political events using evidence and theory; research, writing, and debating skills; professional awareness gained from workplace experience.
Professional Alignment / Accreditation
This course is academic and not tied to a specific professional accreditation – meaning it gives you flexibility to enter careers in government, law, diplomacy, media, NGOs, policy consulting, and more.
Reputation & Employability
Taught by the Department of Government at Essex, ranked among the top Politics departments in Europe.
Known for its research excellence, strong graduate outcomes, and industry connections.
A placement year adds real-world experience, giving you an edge in careers or postgraduate study.
This course isn’t just about reading political theories or debating in classrooms — you actually get to experience how politics works in the real world. From analysing real election data in specialist labs to spending a whole year working in government, NGOs, media, or international organisations — Essex makes sure you graduate with practical skills, not just a degree.
You’ll learn in a department that’s ranked top in the UK for Politics and International Relations research, which means you’re surrounded by real experts who actually influence policy and global discussions. And the best part? You’re encouraged to step outside the textbook and into real political environments.
To give you a clearer picture, here’s how theory becomes practice at Essex:
You’ll actually get to do things like:
Placement Year (Optional but highly recommended): Spend your third year working full-time with an organisation related to politics, diplomacy, public policy, law firms, NGOs, media, or even within Parliament. This is real-world, paid or unpaid experience — not just shadowing.
Career Portfolio Modules: Instead of waiting until final year to think about jobs, these modules help you build a professional CV, write policy briefs, practise interviews, and develop leadership and communication skills — all during your degree.
Political Research Labs: You’ll work in computer-based research labs equipped with political analysis software to study voting behaviour, public opinion, diplomacy trends, conflict data, and global governance.
Group Simulations & Policy Projects: Students take part in model UN-style debates, mock negotiations, campaign planning, and group projects where you create real policy proposals.
Internships on Campus and Abroad: Through Essex Interns, the Frontrunners Programme, and external NGOs or think tanks, you can take on paid roles or term-time internships during your studies.
Access to the UK’s Largest Political Science Research Community: You’re invited to seminars by guest speakers — diplomats, journalists, MPs, political analysts from BBC, UN, Amnesty International, etc.
Specialist Study Spaces: You’ll have access to the Albert Sloman Library, digital parliamentary archives, European election databases, and quiet postgraduate-style research zones.
Digital Tools & Software: Training includes tools for data analysis and political forecasting using platforms such as R, Stata, Qualtrics, SPSS, and international relations data platforms.
A Politics and International Relations degree from Essex opens doors to careers that have real impact — in governments, international organisations, NGOs, media, law, diplomacy, and more. Because this course includes a placement year, you’ll graduate not just with a degree, but with work experience, professional contacts, and the confidence to work in fast-moving political environments.
