4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re someone who constantly questions world events, wonders why countries go to war, or wants to understand how leaders make decisions that impact millions of lives, this degree is made for you. The BA Politics and International Relations at Essex combines the study of government, global issues, diplomacy, conflict, human rights, and international organisations like the UN and NATO. It's perfect for curious, outspoken students who want to shape the world rather than just watch it.
What You’ll Study – Curriculum Structure
Year 1 – Building the Foundations
You’ll start by learning the basics of political systems and international relations. Through modules like Introduction to Politics and International Relations: Theories and Approaches, you’ll explore how governments work, how power operates, and how countries interact. You'll also learn how to think like a social scientist — analysing real-world problems with evidence and logic.
Year 2 – Diving into Real Global Issues
This year gets more exciting as theory meets reality. You’ll explore topics such as human rights, elections and voter behaviour, civil wars, terrorism, peacekeeping, and how countries respond to crises and natural disasters. Modules like Contemporary Topics in International Relations help you unpack conflicts, global justice, and international development.
Year 3 – Your Year Abroad
You’ll spend this year studying at one of Essex’s partner universities overseas. It’s a chance to live in another country, experience a new political culture, and gain global confidence — all while earning credits toward your degree.
Final Year (Back at Essex)
You return with a broader world perspective and dive into advanced modules and a research project or dissertation. You can specialise in areas like global diplomacy, Middle Eastern politics, political psychology, or international law — shaping the degree around your interests.
