BSc Politics and International Relations (Including Placement Year)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

If you're passionate about how governments make decisions, why conflicts happen, or how global organisations shape the world, this course is designed for you. At Essex, you’ll explore real-world politics and international events while gaining research, analytical and professional skills that employers value.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building the Foundations

Your first year helps you understand how politics really works—both in the UK and across the world. You’ll study modules like Introduction to Politics, International Relations: Theories and Approaches, and Conflict Analysis, which help you make sense of governments, elections, diplomacy and war. You’ll also begin learning how to research political issues using data and case studies.

Year 2 – Going Deeper into Global Politics

In second year, you start applying political theories to real-life events. Modules such as Domestic Politics and International Relations and Political Research Methods show you how national decisions influence international affairs. You’ll develop stronger analytical and writing skills, perfect for careers in government, diplomacy or policy-making.

Placement Year – Experience the Real World

This is your chance to step into the world of work. During your placement year, you could work in government departments, NGOs, embassies, political consultancies or international organisations. It’s a huge advantage on your CV—giving you professional experience, contacts and clarity on your future career.

Final Year – Specialisation & Independent Research

In your final year, you choose topics that match your interests: international security, human rights, political economy, global conflict, or diplomacy. You’ll also complete a dissertation or major project, applying everything you’ve learned to a topic you care about.

From your first year, you’ll use real political data, professional research tools, and take part in seminars where you debate global issues just like policy analysts or diplomats would. And with the built-in placement year, you’ll step into the workplace and see how politics functions beyond the classroom.

Here’s what experiential learning actually looks like at Essex:

  •  Specialist Political Research Labs

  •  Career Portfolio (Every Year)
Instead of waiting until graduation to think about jobs, you build a Career Portfolio from Year 1. This includes your skills, reflections, projects, and experiences to show employers what you can do.

  •  Placement Year – Work in Politics or International Affairs
During your third year, you can work at places like government departments, NGOs, embassies, political consultancies, or media organisations. This year counts as part of your degree and gives you real workplace experience and contacts.

  •  Debates, Simulations & Group Work
Classes aren’t just lectures – you’ll take part in discussions, group projects, presentations, mock decision-making exercises, and policy debates to build confidence in speaking and teamwork.

  •  Albert Sloman Library & Research Centres
You’ll study in one of the best political research libraries in the UK, and can access resources from the Department of Government’s research centres, ranked among Europe’s best.
