Integrated Master in Politics: International Relations

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by how governments make decisions, why conflicts happen, or how global power shapes people’s lives, this course is built for you. This four-year Integrated Master’s lets you study politics and international relations in depth from day one and graduate with a Master’s degree, giving you a competitive edge for careers in diplomacy, policy, international organisations, or further study.

 Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Discover the World of Politics
Your first year introduces you to the big ideas and global issues that shape our world. You’ll study Introduction to Politics, Introduction to International Relations, and Contemporary Topics in International Relations, where you explore real-world events like elections, wars and global institutions. Through Thinking Like a Social Scientist, you’ll also learn how political research actually works.

Year 2 – Theories, Conflicts and Research Skills
This is where things go deeper. You’ll study International Relations: Theories and Approaches to understand thinkers like Marx, Realists, Liberals and Feminists. Modules like Conflict Analysis teach you why wars start and how peace is negotiated. You’ll also begin working with research methods and data — essential if you’re considering government, NGOs or postgraduate research.

 Year 3 – Specialisation & Independent Research
Now you start shaping your degree around your interests. You’ll choose optional modules — such as human rights, global justice, political psychology or environmental politics — and complete a Capstone Project, researching a political issue that matters to you. You can also add a study abroad or placement year to gain real-world international experience.

 Year 4 – Master’s-Level Expertise
Your final year feels more like graduate study. You’ll analyse complex global challenges, work on advanced research projects, and can produce a dissertation-style piece of work. By the end, you’ll think and write at Master’s level — something employers and universities really value.

 Focus Areas

“Global conflict & security, human rights and diplomacy, political ideologies, environmental politics, global governance.”

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This course isn’t just about lectures and essays — Essex makes sure you actually experience how politics works in the real world. From your first year, you’ll be encouraged to debate, research real political issues, work in teams, and even step into professional environments through placements or study abroad. The Department of Government is known for its research-led teaching, active student community, and support systems that help you grow into a confident analyst, speaker, and problem-solver.

And because politics is about people, power, and decisions, you’ll learn in environments that feel engaging — simulations, research projects, conferences, and student-run political societies. You can even spend a year working or studying in another country to get real international exposure.

Here’s how you’ll gain hands-on experience:

  • Optional placement year – Work full-time in a political office, NGO, policy organisation, or media environment and return to finish your Master’s with real professional experience.

  • Study Abroad opportunity – Spend a year at one of Essex’s partner universities around the world, experiencing different political systems and cultures firsthand.

  • Student-led societies – Join the Politics Society, Debating Union, or Model United Nations to practise diplomacy, public speaking, and negotiation in real simulations and conferences.

  • Annual student research conference – Present your ideas just like a real academic or policy researcher, get feedback, and build confidence in public communication.

  • Research-active department – Essex is one of the top political research departments in the UK, so students often get access to real projects, seminars, and policy workshops run by leading experts.

  • Support for academic skills – One-to-one writing support, research method workshops, and study skills advisors help you write, analyse, and think like a professional political researcher.

  • Facilities that support real political learning – You’ll work in modern seminar rooms, access one of the UK’s best Social Science libraries, and use digital political data platforms for research and assignments.
