4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re fascinated by global conflicts, peacebuilding, and the strategies that shape international security, the BA War, Peace and International Relations with Placement Year at Reading is designed for you. It combines academic study with the chance to spend a year gaining real-world experience, preparing you for careers in diplomacy, government, NGOs, or security policy.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year sets the foundations. You’ll explore core modules like War and Warfare, International Relations, and Introduction to Political Ideas. These give you a grounding in how wars are fought and understood, the basics of international systems, and the big political debates around democracy, freedom, and justice. You’ll also sharpen your academic skills through Degree Core Competencies and study topics like Politics of Climate Change, linking global challenges to politics.
Year 2
Now you dig deeper. Modules such as Modern International Relations and Contemporary Strategy push you to think critically about globalisation, conflict, nuclear weapons, and the logic of strategy in war. You’ll also study Intelligence, War and International Relations, which looks at how intelligence shapes policy and warfare. Optional modules like International Terrorism or US Foreign Policy let you specialise in areas you find most exciting.
Year 3 – Placement Year
Here’s where the Reading course really stands out. You’ll spend a full year working in a relevant organisation—whether that’s in government, international agencies, think tanks, or NGOs. This is your chance to apply what you’ve learned, build networks, and gain valuable experience that makes your CV stand out. Even better, you’ll only pay 15% of the usual tuition fee during this year.
Year 4
Returning to campus, you’ll take advanced modules and possibly write a dissertation, pulling together everything you’ve studied. You’ll look at war, peace, and international politics from ethical, strategic, and historical angles, leaving you well-prepared for professional roles in diplomacy, research, or policy.
Focus areas: warfare and strategy, causes of conflict, intelligence and security, international relations theory, ethics of war and peace, peacebuilding.
Learning outcomes: strong knowledge of international conflict and peace theories, ability to analyse security issues, research and communication skills, teamwork and critical thinking, professional experience from the placement year.
Professional alignment: While not tied to a specific accrediting body, this degree is built with careers in diplomacy, civil service, NGOs, defence, security, and international organisations in mind. The placement year gives you a clear pathway into these roles.
