BA Hons Politics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Queen Mary University of London

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how governments work, why people vote the way they do, or how global issues like migration and climate change shape politics, this degree will give you the answers—and the skills to ask better questions. The BA Politics at Queen Mary is perfect if you want to explore ideas, debate big issues, and develop the tools to make sense of today’s complex political world.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year lays the foundation. You’ll get to grips with Thinking Politically: Introduction to Concepts, Theories and Ideologies, and dive into Introduction to International Relations and Political Analysis. There’s also a hands-on Politics in Action module, where you start applying theory to real issues. You can also branch out into areas like British Politics or Global Histories, so you begin shaping your degree to your own interests.

Year 2

In the second year, the focus shifts to sharpening your research skills and broadening your perspective. You’ll explore Modern Political Thought or Comparative Politics, and you’ll learn how to do serious academic research through methods modules like Qualitative or Quantitative Research. This is where you’ll begin specialising—choosing themes and regions that fascinate you, while learning the analytical skills to back up your arguments with evidence.

Year 3

By final year, you’re ready to go deeper. You can choose advanced modules on the European Union, race and racism in politics, or foreign policy. Many students use this year to work on an independent project or dissertation, pulling together everything they’ve learned into a piece of work they can be proud of. It’s your chance to specialise in the big questions that matter most to you.

Focus Areas

Government & Institutions | Political Theory & Ideologies | Comparative & International Politics | Research Methods | Regional Politics (Europe, South Asia, Africa)

Learning Outcomes

You’ll learn how to think critically about politics, evaluate competing theories, design and carry out research, and present your ideas clearly—skills that are valuable whether you go into government, NGOs, think tanks, journalism, or business.

Professional Alignment

While this degree isn’t tied to one professional body, it’s designed to connect you with the real world. Through guest talks, study abroad opportunities, and practical projects, you’ll gain both knowledge and experience that employers are looking for.

Reputation & Employability

Queen Mary is consistently ranked among the top UK universities for graduate employability and is a favourite among leading employers. In fact, most Politics graduates are working or in further study within six months of finishing their degree—proof that these skills open doors in a wide range of careers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Queen Mary, studying Politics isn’t just about reading theories—it’s about living them. You’ll get to practice the skills of a real political analyst through debates, simulations, group projects, and research training. And since you’ll be based in London, you’ll be right next to Parliament, think tanks, NGOs, and embassies—so the classroom and the city work hand in hand.

Here’s how you’ll learn by doing:

  • Parliamentary and Civil Society Internships – In your final year, you can spend two days a week working either in Parliament or with a civil society organisation in London. It’s a direct chance to see how political offices and NGOs really operate.

  • Debates and Role-Play – Many classes include simulations and role-play activities that put you in the shoes of policymakers, campaigners, or negotiators, helping you sharpen your problem-solving and communication skills.

  • Research Methods Training – You’ll actually use both qualitative and quantitative methods—whether that’s interviews, surveys, or data analysis—so you graduate with practical research skills that employers value.

  • Independent Dissertation – In your final year, you’ll carry out your own research project on a political issue you care about most, guided by academic experts.

  • Year Abroad Option – If you choose the Year Abroad track, you’ll spend a year at a partner university in Europe, North America, Asia, or Australia, gaining international experience and a global outlook.

  • Mile End Institute & Public Events – You’ll join debates, book launches, and talks by high-profile speakers, giving you a direct line to policymakers and practitioners.

  • Specialist Research Centres – The Centre for European Research and other institutes connect you with cutting-edge work on global and regional politics.

Your Politics degree here will feel less like “studying from a textbook” and more like stepping straight into the world of politics, gaining experiences that make you career-ready from day one.
