BA Hons Politics with a Year abroad

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Queen Mary University of London

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by how power works, why governments act the way they do, and how global events shape our lives, then Queen Mary’s BA Politics is a fantastic choice. This degree is designed for students who want to explore big questions about democracy, justice, and international relations, while also developing the research and analytical skills that employers really value.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building your foundations

Your first year gives you the core tools to study politics at university level. You’ll cover essential modules like Thinking Politically: Introduction to Concepts, Theories and Ideologies, Introduction to International Relations, Political Analysis, and Politics in Action. Alongside these, you can explore topics such as British Politics or Global Histories, and even take an elective from another subject area if you want to broaden your interests.

Year 2 – Deepening your knowledge

In your second year, you’ll tackle big thinkers and big questions. Core modules include Modern Political Thought I & II and Introduction to Social Science Methodologies, helping you sharpen your research skills. You’ll then pick a specialist research methods module — whether you prefer qualitative, quantitative, or more creative approaches. From there, you can branch out into areas like Comparative Politics, The UK and the EU, Modernity: Theories of the State, Economy and Society, or US Politics.

Year 3 – Specialising and independent research

Your final year is about independence and choice. You’ll complete a Dissertation in Politics or International Relations, where you’ll dive deep into a topic you care about most. Beyond that, you can choose from a wide range of modules on themes such as gender and politics, global ethics, environmental politics, migration, or ethnic diversity — allowing you to truly personalise your degree.

Focus areas

"Political theory, international relations, comparative politics, British and US politics, European studies, and specialist themes like gender, environment, and migration."

Learning outcomes

"By the end of the course, you’ll be confident in analysing complex political debates, skilled in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, and able to present clear, evidence-based arguments. You’ll also graduate with the ability to carry out independent research and engage with political issues that really matter in today’s world."
