Politics (BA)

NA On Campus Bachelors Program

Cardiff University

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how governments work, why political decisions are made, and how power shapes our world, Cardiff’s BA Politics is the perfect choice. This flexible and engaging degree gives you a strong foundation in political ideas and institutions while allowing you to explore the issues you care most about — from democracy and justice to public policy and global affairs.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Your Foundations

Your first year introduces you to the essential ideas and systems that underpin political life. You’ll study topics like Introduction to Political Thought, Comparative Government and Politics, and Histories and Texts in International Relations, exploring how political systems operate across the world and how ideas have shaped them over time. Alongside these, you’ll sharpen your skills in research, writing, and critical thinking — all key tools for a successful politics student.

Year 2 – Shaping Your Path

In your second year, you’ll dive deeper into how politics functions in the real world. A core module, Governing the UK, explores the structures, processes, and challenges of the UK’s political system. Around this, you’ll choose from a wide range of optional modules — from public policy and populism to political economy and justice — letting you tailor the degree to match your interests and career ambitions.

Year 3 – Specialising and Creating Impact

Your final year is all about specialising and applying what you’ve learned. You’ll complete a 40-credit independent project — such as a dissertation, community-based research project, or a political simulation — where you’ll investigate a topic you’re passionate about. You’ll also choose four advanced optional modules, allowing you to deepen your expertise in areas like global politics, comparative politics, or public policy.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Cardiff, studying politics goes far beyond lectures and textbooks — it’s about experiencing how politics really works in the world around you. From the very start of your degree, you’ll apply what you learn through real-world projects, placements, and interactive teaching. Whether it’s working alongside parliamentary staff, getting involved with local community initiatives, or undertaking your own research project, you’ll build practical skills that employers truly value.

Here’s how Cardiff helps you put your learning into action:

  • Learn directly from the experts – Several modules are co-taught by staff from the UK Parliament and feature guest lectures from politicians, civil servants, and campaigners, giving you first-hand insight into how decisions are made.

  • Take part in professional placements – You’ll have opportunities to gain real-world experience with organisations involved in Welsh governance, public policy, or community development, applying your classroom knowledge in practical settings.

  • Join Cardiff’s On-Campus Internship Scheme – Work up to eight weeks in paid internships on university research projects or within academic departments, helping you build your CV before you even graduate.

  • Engage in simulations and group projects – Experience how political processes work through practical exercises like political simulations or collaborative community projects designed to boost democratic participation.

  • Tailor your experience with a placement year – If you want to go further, you can add a professional placement year to your degree, working in government, NGOs, think tanks, or political consultancies.

  • Access cutting-edge digital tools – Cardiff’s virtual learning environment supports interactive discussions, collaborative projects, and multimedia learning, helping you develop digital communication and research skills.

  • Use world-class research resources – Explore Cardiff’s specialist libraries, archives, and research centres, and use them to support your dissertation or independent political research.

These opportunities mean that by the time you graduate, you’ll not only understand political theory — you’ll also know how to use it in real-world contexts.
