Swansea University

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about understanding how the past shapes the present — and how political ideas and decisions influence the world we live in — then Swansea’s BA History and Politics is a perfect choice. This degree blends two complementary disciplines, giving you a deep insight into historical events, political systems, power structures, and how societies evolve. It’s an ideal pathway for students who are curious about global issues, governance, and cultural change, and who want a versatile qualification that opens doors to careers in government, media, education, heritage, and beyond.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year builds a strong foundation in both history and politics. You’ll explore key historical periods and methods in modules like Making History (HIH122) and The Early Modern World, 1500–1800 (HIH118), developing the skills historians use to interpret the past. In politics, modules such as Politics and the People (PO-119) and Introduction to Politics (PO-131) introduce you to political systems, ideologies, and institutions. You’ll also get the chance to experience history beyond the classroom with modules like Fieldtrip: The Past in its Place (HHC100), which brings historical study to life through on-site learning.

Year 2

In your second year, you’ll deepen your understanding of how societies are governed and how political ideas evolve. Modules such as The State and Political Institutions (PO-209) and The History of Political Thought (PO-245) examine how political structures develop and function. On the history side, The Practice of History (HIH237) sharpens your research and analytical skills, preparing you for more advanced study. You’ll also begin choosing specialist optional modules focused on topics like war, medicine, identity, or global empires, allowing you to shape your degree around your interests.

Year 3

Your final year is where you bring everything together. You’ll complete an independent dissertation, allowing you to explore a topic you’re passionate about in depth, with support from expert staff. Alongside this, you’ll choose advanced optional modules — from political institutions and governance to cultural heritage and gender history — giving you the freedom to focus on areas that align with your career goals or postgraduate ambitions. Fieldwork, seminars, and debates play a key role, helping you refine your research, communication, and critical thinking skills.
