This degree explores everything from the foundations of political systems and ideologies to today’s most pressing global challenges. It’s ideal for students who are curious about government, public policy, international affairs, and political ideas — and who want to build strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills that are highly valued in a wide range of careers.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year gives you a strong grounding in the fundamentals of political science. You’ll study key modules such as Politics and the People and Introduction to Politics, where you’ll explore how political systems function, how power is distributed, and how citizens influence decision-making. Modules like Disinformation, Ideology and Bias and Europe of Extremes introduce you to the complexities of political ideas and events that have shaped modern Europe. You’ll also sharpen your reasoning and ethical thinking through philosophy-based modules such as Living Well and Doing Good.

Year 2

In your second year, you’ll deepen your understanding of governance and political thought. Modules such as The State and Political Institutions and The History of Political Thought will give you insight into how political structures evolve and how past thinkers continue to shape modern governance. You’ll also explore how policies are formed and debated in modules like British Politics and Public Policy and Disunited Kingdom?, and you’ll examine global power dynamics and international relations through Anarchy and Order: Theories in International Relations.

Year 3

Your final year is all about specialisation and independence. You’ll complete a dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about, conducting original research and applying the skills you’ve developed throughout your degree. You’ll also choose from advanced modules like Senedd Cymru / The Welsh Parliament, Digital Futures, Capitalism and Justice, and Africa in International Relations, giving you the freedom to tailor your studies to your interests and career goals.
