Philosophy, Politics and Economics BA

3 Year On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how societies work, why governments make the decisions they do, and what principles guide those choices, Sheffield’s Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) degree is an ideal fit. It’s a flexible, intellectually rich course that blends three perspectives—political analysis, ethical reasoning, and economic problem-solving—to help you make sense of the big challenges shaping our world.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year is all about building a solid foundation. Through modules like Principles in Politics, Philosophy & Economics (PPE) and Economy, Society and Public Policy, you’ll explore the big questions around inequality, sustainability, and democracy. Alongside these, you’ll tailor your interests with options in politics (such as British Politics or Global Political Economy), philosophy (Reason and Argument or Mind and World), and economics (Mathematical Methods for Economics).

Year 2
In the second year, you’ll start applying your knowledge to real-world contexts. You’ll take Policy Analysis and Programme Evaluation to learn how policies are designed and assessed, and Case Studies in PPE, where you’ll look at global challenges like climate change or healthcare through an interdisciplinary lens. Core economics modules like Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics give you the analytical and technical skills employers really value.

Year 3
By your final year, you’ll bring everything together in a Dissertation in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, giving you the freedom to research a topic that excites you most. You’ll also choose from a wide range of advanced modules—whether it’s Global Justice, Corporations in Global Politics, or Ethics of Political Leadership—so you can really specialise in the areas you care about.

Focus Areas

Interdisciplinary thinking, applied policy analysis, ethical reasoning, advanced economics, global challenges.

Learning Outcomes

You’ll graduate with the ability to critically evaluate policy, use economic reasoning to tackle social issues, and construct strong, evidence-based arguments—skills that open doors in government, policy, consultancy, NGOs, and beyond.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

While this isn’t a directly accredited program like Law or Medicine, Sheffield PPE graduates are highly regarded because of the course’s mix of quantitative training, philosophical depth, and political insight. It’s especially attractive for careers in the Civil Service, international organisations, think tanks, and policy research.

The University of Sheffield is consistently recognised worldwide—ranked in the top 100 universities globally (QS 2026) and known for its strong reputation in the social sciences. Employers value Sheffield PPE graduates for their versatility, critical thinking, and ability to link big ideas with practical solutions.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Studying PPE at Sheffield isn’t just about reading books and writing essays—you’ll be putting ideas into practice from the very start. The course is designed to help you think like a policymaker, economist, and philosopher all at once, with plenty of chances to apply your learning in real-world settings. You’ll work with the Sheffield Methods Institute (SMI), a specialist centre that trains you in the research and analytical skills employers really want.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Learn by doing – you won’t just study theories of politics and economics, you’ll test them using real data and professional research tools in the SMI.

  • Master research software – modules like Policy Analysis and Programme Evaluation introduce you to data analysis software so you can confidently work with numbers and policy evidence.

  • Work placements – you can take on summer or year-long placements, with opportunities to gain experience in government departments, NGOs, or organisations tackling big social and economic issues.

  • Study abroad – between your second and third year, you’ll have the option to study overseas at one of Sheffield’s 250+ partner universities, giving you a global perspective on politics and economics.

  • Learn from the experts – guest speakers and lecturers bring current political debates and philosophical challenges right into the classroom.

  • Your own research project – in your final year, you’ll complete a dissertation where you choose a topic you care about and apply everything you’ve learned across politics, philosophy and economics.

  • Excellent facilities – whether it’s the 24/7 Information Commons for study space, the Western Bank Library’s specialist collections, or the dedicated support of the Sheffield Methods Institute, you’ll have everything you need to thrive.
