Politics and Sociology BA

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how politics and society shape our everyday lives, Sheffield’s Politics and Sociology BA is a brilliant choice. This course suits students who want to dig into issues like inequality, identity, democracy, and global change, while also learning how to research and analyse real-world problems from two powerful perspectives.

Curriculum Structure

First Year

You’ll start by getting a solid foundation in both politics and sociology. In modules like Political Analysis 1: An Introduction to Research and Scholarship, you’ll learn how to think and write like a political researcher. On the sociology side, classes such as Introduction to Social Theory and The Sociology of Everyday Life help you explore how culture, power, and identity influence our daily experiences. Alongside this, you can choose topics like British Politics, Comparative Politics, or even global perspectives such as Gender and the World or Race and Racism in World Politics.

Second Year

In your second year, the focus shifts to developing stronger research and analytical skills. Through Political Analysis: Research Design and Data Analysis, you’ll get to grips with research methods and data — essential for understanding how decisions are made and policies are shaped. In sociology, modules like Sociological Theory and Analysis push you to think critically about the structures behind society. You can then tailor your degree with options ranging from European Union Politics and Contemporary Security Challenges in Politics, to Migration Studies, Media and Consumer Culture, or Crime and Justice in Sociology.

Third Year

Your final year is all about choice and independence. You’ll dive into specialist modules that reflect your interests — whether that’s Public Policy and Democratic Politics, Peacekeeping and International Intervention, or sociology options like Protest and Social Change and Whiteness, Power and Privilege. You’ll also carry out a major research project, either a Politics dissertation or a Sociology extended essay, giving you the chance to investigate a question you really care about and showcase your independent thinking.
