4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Aberdeen

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about languages and global affairs, the MA in French and Politics at the University of Aberdeen offers the perfect combination. This degree lets you master the French language and immerse yourself in its culture while gaining a deep understanding of how political systems work, how decisions are made, and how they shape the world around us. It’s a great choice for anyone interested in careers in diplomacy, international organisations, public policy, media, or any field where language and politics meet.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building strong foundations
Your first year introduces you to the fundamentals of both subjects. In politics, you’ll study how governments function and how political power is exercised in courses like Democracy and Governance (PI1018) and Power and Conflict (PI1518). At the same time, you’ll focus on developing your French language skills through Beginners French Language 1 & 2 (FR1028 / FR1528) or Qualified French Language 1 & 2 (FR1029 / FR1529), depending on your level. You’ll also start exploring French culture and society through modules like French Culture and Society: From Occupation to Decolonisation (FR1031) or The Global City in Text and Film (LA1501).

Year 2 – Exploring ideas and global issues
In second year, you’ll dive deeper into political theory and international affairs with modules such as Ideas and Ideologies in Politics and International Relations (PI2009) and Global Politics: Equality and Inequality (PI2508). On the French side, you’ll strengthen your language skills and broaden your understanding of France’s history, society, and cultural change through courses like Revolution and Revolt in Modern and Contemporary France (FR2016) and Decentering France: Social Movements and Cultural Transformation (FR2517). Language modules at a higher level (Advanced Introductory French or Advanced French) will continue to build your fluency.

Year 3 – Deepening expertise and gaining experience
Your third year is all about sharpening your skills and applying them in real-world contexts. You’ll enhance your communication abilities in Junior Honours French Language (FR3089) and learn how to conduct academic research in Research Methods in Politics & International Relations (PI3084). You can tailor your studies with optional modules such as US Politics (PI3080) or African Security (IR3021), and many students spend part of the year abroad in a French-speaking country, putting their language skills to practical use. There’s also the chance to gain hands-on experience through a work placement module (FR3597).

Year 4 – Mastery and independence
In your final year, you’ll bring everything together. The Senior Honours French Language (FR4089) module ensures you graduate with advanced communication skills, while your dissertation in either French or Politics allows you to explore a topic you’re passionate about in depth. You’ll also choose from a range of specialist modules — such as Comparative Constitutional Systems (AT4557), Extreme Right in Western Europe (PI4560) or International Migration and Europe (PI4579) — to refine your expertise and prepare for the career path that excites you most.
