Philosophy, Politics and Economics, MA

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Aberdeen

Program Overview

The MA Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at the University of Aberdeen is a powerful combination for anyone who wants to understand how ideas, governments, and economies shape the world around us. It’s perfect for curious thinkers who enjoy debating ethical questions, analysing political decisions, and exploring how money and markets influence society — all while preparing for leadership roles in business, government, or the non-profit world.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building the Foundations
Your first year is all about getting a solid grounding in the three core disciplines. You’ll study how markets work and how economies grow in The Economics of Business and Society (EC1006) and The Global Economy (EC1506). At the same time, Experience, Knowledge and Reality (PH1023) introduces you to fundamental philosophical ideas about how we think and understand the world. Politics courses like Democracy and Governance (PI1018) and Power and Conflict (PI1518) help you understand how political systems function and why power matters.

Year 2 – Expanding Your Perspective
In second year, you’ll dig deeper into economic theory with Intermediate Microeconomics (EC2003) and Intermediate Macroeconomics (EC2503). Politics courses such as Ideas and Ideologies (PI2009) and Global Politics: Equality and Inequality (PI2508) challenge you to think critically about political beliefs and global justice. You’ll also boost your employability through Building Skills and Experience for Career Success (PD2002) — a module focused on real-world professional skills.

Year 3 – Specialising and Applying Knowledge
Now it’s time to shape your degree around what interests you most. You’ll choose advanced options across all three subjects, such as Digital Politics: Political Communication in the Internet Age (PI3579) or International Security (IR3518). A standout feature this year is the Employer-Led Interdisciplinary Project (ED3537), where you’ll collaborate with real organisations and apply your classroom learning to real-world challenges — a big plus for your CV.

Year 4 – Bringing It All Together
Your final year is your chance to explore specialist topics in depth, from Science, Technology & International Relations (IR4034) to International Political Psychology (PI4086). You’ll also complete a dissertation in either Economics or Philosophy — an independent research project guided by a supervisor, which allows you to showcase your expertise and intellectual independence.

The University of Aberdeen’s dedicated Careers & Employability Service helps you turn your degree into a strong career path.

The University of Aberdeen is consistently ranked among the UK’s top universities, with an excellent global reputation and strong graduate outcomes. PPE graduates are highly sought after for their versatile skills and interdisciplinary perspective.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Aberdeen, studying PPE is about much more than lectures and textbooks — it’s about putting ideas into action and learning by doing. From the very first year, you’ll engage in discussions, debates, group projects, and real-world problem-solving tasks that connect theory with practice. As you progress, you’ll work on interdisciplinary projects with actual employers, use data tools to analyse real economic trends, and develop the kind of collaborative and analytical skills that employers love.

The University backs this hands-on approach with excellent facilities — from the state-of-the-art Sir Duncan Rice Library to cutting-edge IT infrastructure and access to digital research collections. With over 85% of students rating the IT and library facilities highly, you’ll have everything you need to support your learning and research throughout your degree.

Here’s how experiential learning comes to life in this program:

  • Employer-Led Interdisciplinary Project (ED3537): In your third year, you’ll collaborate with real organisations on a project that requires you to bring together insights from philosophy, politics, and economics — giving you valuable experience in solving real-world challenges.

  • Collaborative group projects: Across different modules, you’ll work with classmates to tackle policy debates, simulate governance decisions, and solve economic case studies, building teamwork and communication skills.

  • Data and digital tools: In your economics courses, you’ll use data analysis and economic modelling tools — including spreadsheet and econometric software — to explore market behaviour and policy outcomes.

  • Rich library and research resources: The award-winning Sir Duncan Rice Library and the university’s vast digital collections are key tools for your essays, research projects, and final-year dissertation.

  • Small-group tutorials and debates: PPE modules often include interactive seminars where you’ll debate ideas, present arguments, and receive direct feedback — sharpening your critical thinking and public speaking skills.

  • Diverse assessment methods: Instead of relying only on exams, you’ll complete essays, research reports, group projects, and a final dissertation, all designed to reflect real-world professional tasks.

This combination of hands-on learning, digital tools, collaborative projects, and real-world experience makes PPE at Aberdeen more than just a degree — it’s a practical launchpad for a career in government, business, policy, or research.

Progression & Future Opportunities

A degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from Aberdeen opens doors to a huge range of exciting and impactful careers. Because you’ll graduate with a unique mix of analytical, political, and ethical thinking skills, employers value PPE graduates for their versatility and ability to tackle complex issues. Many go on to become policy analysts, public affairs advisors, economic consultants, or journalists, while others pursue leadership roles in government, NGOs, international organisations, or the private sector.

Here’s how Aberdeen helps you turn your degree into a successful career:

  • Outstanding career support: The university’s Careers & Employability Service works closely with you from your first year — offering one-to-one guidance, CV and interview workshops, and access to thousands of job opportunities through MyCareerHub. Even after graduation, you’ll continue to have access to these services.

  • Impressive graduate outcomes: More than 95% of Aberdeen graduates are in work or further study shortly after completing their degree. PPE graduates report a median salary of around £24,000 just 15 months after graduation, rising to about £28,000 within three years.

  • Real-world experience through partnerships: The university collaborates with employers through Programme Advisory Boards and Employer Liaison Groups to make sure what you learn is directly relevant to today’s job market. You’ll also have opportunities to gain practical experience through the ABDN Internship Programme, which lets you work on real projects while studying.

  • Strong employer connections: Aberdeen advertises over 4,000 opportunities each year — including internships, part-time jobs, and graduate roles — helping you connect with organisations that value PPE graduates.

  • Long-term value of your degree: Even though PPE isn’t linked to a single professional body, its reputation is globally recognised. Employers know PPE graduates can think critically, analyse data, understand systems, and communicate clearly — skills that are in high demand across government, business, policy, and media.

  • Strong graduate destinations: Many PPE graduates move into roles such as business and research professionals or project managers in finance and consulting, while others join think tanks, NGOs, or international institutions.

Further Academic Progression:
Your journey doesn’t have to stop with an undergraduate degree. Many students go on to specialise further with a Master’s in Economics, Public Policy, Political Theory, International Relations, or Philosophy, and some continue to a PhD. Postgraduate study can open doors to careers in academia, research, policy development, and senior leadership roles in both the public and private sectors.
