BA Politics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Birmingham

Program Overview

If you’ve ever wondered how decisions get made, why some voices are heard more than others, or how protests and policies shape our world, the Politics BA at Birmingham is designed for you. This course gives you a front-row seat to the way power works — from parliaments to grassroots movements — while helping you build sharp analytical, debating, and research skills that employers really value.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building your foundation
Your first year is all about discovering the essentials of political life. You’ll explore modules like Understanding Politics, Introduction to Political Theory, and Global History, while also learning the basics of research through Pathways to Political Research. Current events come to life in Debates in World Politics, where you’ll sharpen your ability to discuss and analyse real issues.

Year 2 – Exploring your interests
In the second year, you’ll dig deeper. Core modules like Comparative Politics and History of Political Ideas give you the big picture, while Research Design prepares you for more independent work. From there, you get to choose your own path — whether that’s British Politics, International Security, Political Ethics, or Globalisation, Capitalism and Welfare. This flexibility lets you start shaping the degree around your passions.

Year 3 – Becoming an expert
The final year is where it all comes together. Your dissertation allows you to research a political question that truly excites you, guided by expert academics. Alongside this, you’ll select from advanced modules such as Environment and Climate Politics, The Politics of Protest and Dissent, or International Negotiation. By the time you graduate, you’ll have both depth and breadth — and the confidence to apply your knowledge in the real world.

Focus areas: Power and governance, political theory, international relations, comparative politics, global security, climate politics, democracy, and protest movements

Learning outcomes: You’ll leave with strong critical thinking skills, confidence in research and communication, the ability to analyse complex systems, and hands-on experience in independent study through your dissertation.

Professional alignment: The course doesn’t tie you to a single accreditation, but it’s highly respected — the University of Birmingham is ranked #1 in the UK for being most frequently targeted by top employers (High Fliers 2024).

Reputation:

  • Top choice for graduate employers (#1 in the UK – High Fliers 2024)

  • Top 15 in the UK for Politics (Complete University Guide 2026)

  • #9 in the UK for research power in Politics and International Studies (REF 2021)

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Birmingham, politics is more than just reading books or writing essays—it’s about stepping into the real world of debate, diplomacy, and decision-making. You’ll be challenged to think like a policymaker, work in teams, and test your ideas in practical settings that mirror the fast-paced nature of global politics. From lively seminars to high-profile international simulations, the course is built to give you the confidence and skills employers are looking for.

Here’s how you’ll get hands-on experience during your degree:

  • Take part in simulations: Represent countries in Model NATO events in Washington, London, or Lisbon, where you’ll debate crises, negotiate with “allies,” and feel what it’s like to be at the table where big decisions are made.

  • Try out the workplace: Through the B-Experienced Internship Programme, you can take on short professional placements (10–20 days) with organisations in government, business, or NGOs—many are flexible, with on-site, hybrid, or remote options.

  • Build your career toolkit: The University’s Careers Network helps you with CV writing, interview prep, and securing internships, making sure you graduate with both knowledge and practical experience.

  • Do your own research: In your final year, you’ll write a dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about, working one-to-one with expert staff who’ll guide you through the process.

  • Learn through projects: Expect seminars, workshops, and group presentations that sharpen your teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills while tackling real political issues.

  • Be taught by experts at the cutting edge: Many final-year modules are led by academics actively researching today’s political challenges, so you’re learning from people shaping the field.

Facilities that support your journey: You’ll study within the Department of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS), part of one of the UK’s largest communities of politics students. Alongside specialist teaching, you’ll have access to the University’s outstanding libraries, study spaces, and career services that help you put learning into practice.
