BA Global Studies with Politics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

If you're someone who enjoys understanding how the world works — why countries make certain decisions, how global conflicts begin, or how climate change, migration, and human rights connect to politics — this course is made for you. At Essex, you’ll study global issues through both a political and cultural lens, exploring real-world challenges while developing the skills to think critically, debate confidently, and understand different perspectives.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building the Foundations
Your first year introduces you to the big ideas shaping our world. Through modules like Introduction to Global Studies and Introduction to Politics, you’ll explore globalisation, power, identity, and political systems. You’ll also learn how to write academically, analyse evidence, and debate major global issues confidently in seminars.

Year 2 – Exploring Global Challenges in Depth
This is where the course becomes more specialised. You can choose modules such as Global Migration and Society, Political Systems and Institutions, or International Relations. You’ll study real-world issues — from borders and refugees to global democracy — while strengthening your research and analytical skills.

Year 3 – Specialisation and Independent Research
In your final year, you’ll choose advanced modules and complete a dissertation or independent research project on a topic you're passionate about — like climate politics, global inequality, diplomacy, or human rights. You’ll develop the ability to research independently, argue with evidence, and present your findings like a professional.

Focus Areas:

globalisation · international relations · migration & culture · political systems · global justice · research methods

Learning Outcomes:

Understand global social and political processes · apply political theory to real-world issues · critically evaluate global sources · conduct independent research · confidently communicate complex ideas

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):

This course is not tied to a specific professional body, but it is designed to develop highly employable skills such as critical thinking, research, policy analysis, and intercultural understanding — ideal for careers in diplomacy, NGOs, media, law, international organisations, and government.

Reputation & Graduate Outlook:

Essex is ranked among the UK’s leading universities for politics and international studies, and its graduates are known for being globally aware, confident communicators, and skilled researchers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This isn’t a course where you just read about world issues — you actually get to experience them. At Essex, you’ll work with real political data, global case studies, archives and interactive workshops that train you to think like a global analyst or policymaker. You’ll learn through debates, small group discussions and real-life scenarios, and you’re encouraged to study abroad so you can experience global cultures and politics first-hand, not just from a textbook.

To make this learning practical and career-focused, Essex gives you access to specialised tools, international study opportunities and research environments such as:

  • Albert Sloman Library + UK Data Archive — where you can access political reports, global statistics, historical records and international datasets used by researchers and policymakers.

  • Study Abroad or Year Abroad option — you can spend a year studying in another country, immersing yourself in global issues like migration, cultural identity and diplomacy while earning credits.

  • Seminar-style teaching and group projects — instead of only exams, you’ll debate topics like climate politics, global inequality or human rights and work on real case studies with your peers.

  • Research skills workshops — learn how to gather and evaluate international sources, policy documents and qualitative/quantitative data relevant to politics and global studies.

  • Access to interdisciplinary institutes — you can attend events, talks and research sessions hosted by Essex’s global and political research centres, connecting academic learning to real-world challenges.
