BA Global Studies with Politics (Including Placement Year)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

If you care about global issues — from climate change to international conflict and human rights — this degree helps you understand how politics shapes our world and how countries, cultures, and people interact. It’s perfect for curious, globally minded students who want academic knowledge and real-world experience through a professional placement year.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building the Foundations
Your first year introduces you to the big ideas behind international relations and political systems through modules like Introduction to International Relations and Contemporary Topics in International Relations. You’ll also take interdisciplinary modules such as Interdisciplinary Research and Problem-Solving and Ways of Knowing, which train you to think critically across history, politics, culture, and global issues. Some students also choose a language or world history option to strengthen global awareness.

Year 2 – Understanding Global Challenges More Deeply
This is where the course becomes more thought-provoking. You’ll study The World in Question, exploring how colonialism, culture, environment, and politics became interconnected over time. Alongside this, modules like International Relations: Theories and Approaches and Conflict Analysis help you understand why wars happen, how peace is negotiated, and how global power really works. There’s also a practical side with modules such as Social Entrepreneurs, Sustainability and Community Action, where real-world problem-solving takes centre stage.

 Year 3 – Placement Year (Real-World Experience)
You’ll step out of the classroom and spend a year working in a professional environment — this could be a government office, NGO, charity, political organisation, or research institute in the UK or abroad. This experience helps you test your interests, build a CV, and make career connections.

Final Year – Specialisation and Independent Thinking
You return to campus with experience and confidence. You’ll take advanced modules like Global Challenges in Interdisciplinary Perspective: Water Conflicts, Water Cultures, and then choose specialist topics — such as diplomacy, migration, gender politics, environmental justice, or international human rights. You may also complete a dissertation on a global issue you are passionate about.
