BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics (Including Year Abroad)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

If you’re the kind of student who questions how governments make decisions, how money moves through society, and why people believe what they do—this course was made for you. The BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Essex brings together three powerful subjects to help you understand how ideas, power, and economies shape the world we live in.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building your foundations

Your first year introduces you to the core of all three subjects. You’ll explore big philosophical questions in modules like Introduction to Philosophy, learn how politics works through Political Theory and Introduction to International Relations, and get your economic basics through Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. This year is all about developing your critical thinking, writing and analytical skills.

Year 2 – Exploring deeper + Year Abroad preparation

In second year, the course becomes more focused. You begin connecting how political decisions affect economies and how philosophical ideas influence public policy. Modules could include Ethics and Public Policy, Comparative Politics, International Economics or Econometrics. If you’ve chosen the Year Abroad option, this is also when you prepare to study at one of Essex’s partner universities around the world.

Year 3 – Specialisation and independent thinking

Your final year lets you shape your degree around what you’re most passionate about. You might study topics like Philosophical Issues in Economics, Global Justice, Advanced Microeconomics, or Diplomacy and Global Governance. You’ll also complete independent research and bring together ideas from all three disciplines—great preparation for careers or postgraduate study.

Focus areas:

“Political decision-making, ethical reasoning, economic systems, public policy, global justice and critical thinking”

Learning outcomes:

“Graduates will be able to analyse political and economic systems, apply philosophical reasoning to real-world issues, interpret data for decision-making, and communicate complex ideas clearly.”

Professional alignment (Accreditation):

This programme isn’t tied to a specific accreditation body—because it’s designed to be broad and interdisciplinary rather than vocational.

Reputation & Employability:

  • Essex is Top 50 in the world for Politics and International Studies (QS Rankings 2024).

  • Economics graduates from Essex earn around £31,000 within 15 months of graduating (DiscoverUni).

  • PPE graduates go into careers in government, diplomacy, journalism, finance, NGOs, consultancy, and policy-making.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What makes PPE at Essex stand out is how much of what you learn is connected to the real world. You won’t just be memorising theories—you’ll actually use them to analyse current political decisions, economic data and ethical debates. From your first year, you’ll work with real policy case studies, debate global political issues in small seminar groups, and learn how to interpret economic data using professional software and research tools. The University also gives you access to specialist research labs, political simulation platforms and academic support from three leading departments: Philosophy, Government and Economics.

And because this degree includes a Year Abroad, you’ll get to apply your learning in another country—studying at one of Essex’s partner universities across Europe, North America, Australia or Asia—building intercultural skills and a global academic perspective.

Now, moving from that into the exact hands-on experiences you get:

  • ESSEXLab – Political Behaviour Research Lab: A dedicated lab used to run experiments in political decision-making, voter behaviour and public policy research. Students can take part in research or assist academic projects.

  • Specialist Economics Software & Data Access: You’ll work with real economic datasets through tools available in the library, including statistical programmes used in modules like Econometrics and Political Economy.

  • Library Study Guides and Digital Resources: The Albert Sloman Library provides dedicated subject guides for Economics, Politics and Philosophy with access to journals like Philosophy Now, Hansard Parliamentary Archives, and global financial datasets.

  • Group Projects & Debates: Modules such as “Comparative Political Analysis” and “Ethics in Public Policy” involve structured group debates, argumentation workshops and collaborative presentations.

  • Research Training & Essay Clinics: Philosophy and Politics departments run writing labs and argument clinics where students refine essays with academic guidance.

  • Year Abroad Opportunities: Through the Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE) Alliance and global partner universities, students can study in countries like the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, USA or Australia for a semester or full year.

  • Political Simulation & Policy Workshops: Students participate in mock parliamentary debates, public policy simulations and model government exercises led by the Department of Government.

  • Career-Based Opportunities: While PPE doesn’t include a compulsory internship, students can take optional work placements or internships through the Essex Employability and Careers Centre, which partners with organisations like Parliament, NGOs and financial institutions.

  • Research Institutes on Campus:

    • Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER) – used in teaching empirical policy analysis.

    • Centre for Ideology and Discourse Analysis – engages students interested in political theory and philosophy.
