If you're passionate about how governments work, why policies are made, or how global events shape our everyday lives, BA Politics at the University of Essex is built for you. Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year is all about understanding the basics of political systems and global issues. You’ll study core modules like Introduction to Politics and Introduction to International Relations, where you explore ideas like democracy, power, the state, and global conflict while also choosing optional modules to broaden your perspective.

Year 2
In the second year, you start analysing politics more deeply using real data and case studies. You’ll take modules such as Political Analysis: Quantitative Methods and choose optional topics like political parties, public policy, human rights, or international conflicts to shape your academic focus.

Year 3
Your final year lets you specialise in what interests you the most. You can work on a dissertation or research project and pick advanced modules in areas like global political economy, human rights, political communication, conflict and security, or public policy.

ESSEXLab – Behavioural research facility: You can take part in real political and social research experiments or even run your own projects using this world-class experimental lab.
