BA Politics and International Relations

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

If you’re someone who constantly questions how governments make decisions, why wars start, or how global organisations shape world affairs, this degree is built for you. At Essex, you won’t just study politics — you’ll debate real-world problems, explore global issues like human rights and conflict, and develop the kind of sharp analytical thinking employers love.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Your Political Foundation
Your first year introduces you to the core ideas behind government, power, and global politics. You’ll explore key modules like Introduction to Politics, Introduction to International Relations, and Authority and Morality. These set the stage for understanding how political systems work and why nations behave the way they do on the world stage.

Year 2 – Understanding Global Conflicts & Diplomatic Thought
In your second year, things get deeper and more analytical. You’ll study International Relations: Theories and Approaches, where you unpack major ideas like realism and liberalism, and Conflict Analysis, which helps you understand why wars happen and how peace is built. You can also choose optional modules to shape your interests — from political economy to European Union politics.

Year 3 – Specialisation & Independent Study
This is where you make the degree your own. You’ll complete a research project or dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about — such as global security, human rights, diplomacy, or political extremism. Alongside this, you’ll choose specialist modules that prepare you for careers in government, NGOs, international organisations, media, or further study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Essex, politics isn’t just something you read about in textbooks — you experience it. From your first year, you’re encouraged to think, debate, research, and problem-solve like a real political analyst. You won’t just study global issues like conflict, diplomacy, or human rights — you’ll actively engage with them through simulations, research training, guest lectures, and real-world political data.

You’ll also be learning in a department known for its research excellence, with access to digital tools, the UK’s first-ever Department of Government, and one of the largest collections of political research data in Europe. And as you grow academically, you’ll also get hands-on support from the university’s Career Services to find internships, placements, or study abroad opportunities.

Now to show how this learning becomes real experience:

  • Debates and simulations in seminars — You regularly take part in group discussions, mock negotiations, and policy debates on issues like global security, elections, or the UN system.

  • Independent dissertation (final year) — You choose a real political problem, conduct your own research using data, reports or interviews, and work one-on-one with a supervisor just like a junior researcher or policy analyst.

  • Research and digital tools — In modules such as Thinking Like a Social Scientist and Politics in Practice, you learn how to analyse political data, use research databases like JSTOR and Factiva, and work with basic statistical and qualitative software used in the industry.

  • Essex Politics Research Centres — You can attend talks and workshops hosted by centres like the Essex Centre for Global Interventions and Essex Human Rights Centre, where academics, diplomats and NGO professionals share real-world case studies.

  • Work placements & internships (optional) — Through Careers and Placements, students take internships at NGOs, MPs’ offices, local councils, embassies, charities, and think tanks in the UK and abroad.

  • Guest speakers & practitioner events — Diplomats, journalists, campaign strategists, charity organisers, and former UN officials are regularly invited to speak with students.

  • Albert Sloman Library & Digital Archives — Access to global political journals, International Relations archives, government documents, UK Parliament Papers, UN databases, and specialist materials for essays and dissertations.
