If you’re curious about how governments make decisions, why conflicts happen, and how global issues like war, climate change and diplomacy are shaped, this degree is for you. The course blends political theory and real-world international issues, helping you understand how power works within and between countries.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1 – Building the Foundations
In your first year, you’ll get a solid introduction to politics and global affairs through modules like Introduction to Politics and Introduction to International Relations. You’ll also learn how to think like a political researcher in Thinking Like a Social Scientist and explore debates around power, ethics and justice in Authority & Morality. This year is all about discovering how political systems work and developing confidence in analysing real-world events.
Year 2 – Understanding the Global System
This is where things get more analytical. You’ll dive deeper into global theories in International Relations: Theories and Approaches, study conflicts and peacebuilding in Conflict Analysis, and explore institutions like the UN through International Organisations. You’ll also begin working with political data in Quantitative Political Analysis, choosing optional modules to shape your own interests—whether that’s European politics, security studies, or human rights.
Year 3 – Specialisation and Independent Research
In your final year, you take more control over your learning. You’ll complete a major independent Capstone Project or Dissertation, where you research a political issue you’re passionate about. Advanced modules like Advanced Quantitative Political Analysis help you build career-ready skills, while optional modules allow you to specialise in areas like foreign policy, global justice or political communication.
