BA (Hons) Philosophy and Politics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Liverpool

Program Overview

If you’re curious about the big questions of life and how they connect to real political issues, this degree is for you. The program brings together the critical, ethical insights of philosophy with the practical, problem-solving focus of politics—perfect if you want to think deeply about justice, freedom, and power while also exploring how governments, institutions, and international systems actually work.

Curriculum Structure

Year One
You’ll start by laying the foundations in both subjects. In philosophy, you’ll take modules like Ethics: Moral Constraints and the Good Human Life and Political Philosophy, while in politics you’ll explore Foundations in Politics and Foundations in International Relations. These courses build your skills in analysing arguments, debating ideas, and understanding the institutions that shape society.

Year Two
In your second year, you’ll have more freedom to choose areas that spark your interest. You might explore topics such as Knowledge and Epistemic Justice in philosophy or dive deeper into political theory and comparative politics. This is where you begin to tailor the degree to your own intellectual journey.

Final Year
Your final year is all about specialising and applying what you’ve learned. You’ll study advanced topics in both philosophy and politics and can even complete a dissertation if you want to explore a subject in depth. If you take the Year in Industry pathway, you’ll also have the chance to spend a full year in a paid work placement before returning to finish your degree.

Focus Areas: Ethics, political theory, justice, knowledge and truth, international politics, critical reasoning

Learning Outcomes: You’ll graduate with sharp analytical and writing skills, confidence in debating complex ideas, and the ability to apply philosophical and political thinking to real-world challenges.

Professional Alignment: While not tied to a single professional accreditation, the program prepares you for fields like law, public policy, journalism, teaching, and research.

Reputation: Liverpool has a strong track record—its Philosophy research was rated world-leading in impact (REF 2021), and combined degrees like this one have excellent graduate outcomes.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Liverpool, your degree goes beyond books and lectures—you’ll be encouraged to put your ideas into action. Whether it’s through lively seminars, research-led teaching, or work experience opportunities, the program is designed to give you the confidence to apply philosophical and political thinking in the real world. You’ll study in the dedicated Gillian Howie House and have access to modern libraries, digital resources, and employability support throughout your journey.

And because Liverpool believes learning is strongest when connected to practice, you’ll find plenty of ways to test your skills outside the classroom:

  • Year in Industry – Spend a full year working in a paid placement, gaining practical experience while building your CV and returning to complete your final year of study.

  • Liverpool Interns Scheme – Take on an 80-hour paid internship with a local business, applying your analytical and communication skills to real challenges.

  • Research Software Engineering Internship – Work alongside academics on genuine research projects, developing digital and problem-solving skills in areas like the humanities and social sciences.

  • Study Resources – Make the most of Liverpool’s extensive library collections, study spaces, and digital tools to support both group projects and independent research.
