BA Politics and Chinese

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how politics shapes our world and want to connect that knowledge with the language and culture of one of the world’s most influential nations, this degree is a perfect fit. The BA in Politics and Chinese combines global political study with intensive Mandarin learning, including a year abroad in a Chinese-speaking country to bring your skills to life.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year is all about building strong foundations. You’ll explore big themes in politics—like international relations, security, and global development—while starting your Mandarin journey from the basics (up to A-level standard). Alongside language study, you’ll also discover the history, society, and culture of China, helping you see the connections between politics and people.

Year 2
As you move forward, you’ll get the chance to dive deeper into politics through topics such as global security, European politics, or international development. Your Mandarin studies continue, but now with richer cultural insight—you’ll explore Chinese society, literature, film, and politics. By the end of this year, you’ll feel much more confident communicating and thinking critically across both disciplines.

Year 3 – Year Abroad
This is where it all comes together. You’ll spend a year living and studying in a Chinese-speaking country, immersing yourself in the language and culture every day. It’s not just about fluency—it’s about experiencing Chinese society first-hand and learning how to navigate cross-cultural settings in real life.

Year 4
In your final year, you’ll sharpen your expertise by taking advanced politics modules while pushing your Mandarin to a higher level. You’ll leave university as a well-rounded graduate who can confidently analyze global issues and communicate effectively in Chinese—skills that stand out to employers everywhere.

Focus areas: Global politics, international relations, development and security, Mandarin language, Chinese society and culture.

Learning outcomes: Strong political analysis skills, high-level Mandarin fluency, cultural adaptability, and the ability to work confidently in international and cross-cultural roles.
