BA Politics and Japanese

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

This degree gives you the best of both worlds: a deep dive into politics and international relations, paired with the chance to master the Japanese language and culture. It’s an ideal choice if you want to combine big-picture global issues with real-world intercultural experience, and it includes a full year of living and studying in Japan.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll start by building a foundation in both subjects. In Politics, you’ll explore core themes like political theory, world politics, and the UK political system. Alongside this, you’ll take intensive Japanese language classes tailored to your level, as well as cultural studies that bring the language to life.

Year 2
The second year takes you further, with optional Politics modules that let you follow your interests—whether that’s international relations, political philosophy, or comparative politics. Your Japanese studies deepen too, with classes designed to prepare you for everyday conversations, academic work, and life abroad.

Year 3
This is the highlight for many students: a full year in Japan. You’ll study at one of Manchester’s partner universities—such as Waseda or Kyoto—immersing yourself in the language and culture while experiencing daily life in a completely different setting. It’s the kind of experience that shapes you personally and professionally.

Year 4
Back in Manchester, you’ll refine your focus. You can choose advanced Politics units like The Politics of the European Union or Global Capitalism, Crisis and Revolt, while also reaching a high level of Japanese proficiency. Many students also write a dissertation in their final year, tying together their political knowledge and language skills in an area that really inspires them.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

If you choose the BA Politics and Japanese at Manchester, you won’t just be sitting in lectures—you’ll be building real skills that prepare you for life after university. From day one, you’ll be using specialist language labs, interactive software, and digital resources that make learning Japanese hands-on and immersive. What really sets this degree apart is the chance to spend a full year in Japan, where you’ll live the language and culture every single day. Combine that with Manchester’s world-class political research environment, and you’ll graduate with both academic depth and practical experience that employers really value.

Here’s how the experience comes to life for students:

  • High-tech language learning: Use interpreting suites, recording rooms, and multimedia software in the University Language Centre to sharpen your Japanese speaking and listening skills.

  • Conversation practice: Book small-group rooms and practice with peers and native speakers, with digital recorders available so you can track your progress.

  • Specialist language library: Access the LEAP Library and Open Learning Centre in the Samuel Alexander Building—packed with language textbooks, films, dictionaries, and even portable recorders you can borrow.

  • Study and social spaces: Work in the UK’s largest academic library or the 24/7 Alan Gilbert Learning Commons with flexible group hubs and quiet booths designed for collaboration.

  • Year abroad in Japan: Live and study in Japan, gaining not only fluency but also independence, cultural understanding, and an international perspective.

  • Cultural links in Manchester: Take advantage of partnerships with institutions like HOME (for film, art, and theatre) and the Manchester China Institute, adding even more global context to your studies.

  • Interactive teaching: Small-group seminars, workshops, and projects encourage you to debate political ideas, develop research skills, and work with classmates on presentations and reports.

  • Independent research: In your final year, you’ll choose a dissertation topic that combines politics and Japanese, supported by the university’s vast resources and expert staff.
