BSocSc Politics and International Relations

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by the big questions of power, conflict, justice, and global change, the BSocSc Politics and International Relations at The University of Manchester is designed for you. This degree gives you the tools to understand how politics works—both in the UK and across the world—and helps you develop the analytical and research skills that employers value.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll get a solid foundation in the three pillars of the course: Comparative Politics, International Politics, and Political Theory. You’ll study engaging units like Making Sense of Politics, Introduction to International Politics, and Introduction to Political Theory, while also building key study and research skills that will support your learning across all three years.

Year 2

As you move into your second year, you’ll start tailoring the degree to your interests. A compulsory unit, How to Conduct Politics Research, will strengthen your academic skills, while optional modules let you explore themes such as global security, injustice and resistance, or the politics of globalisation. Whether you’re drawn to topics like development, gender, or international conflict, you’ll have the chance to dig deeper into the issues that inspire you most.

Year 3 (or Year 4 with Study Abroad)

In your final year, you’ll bring everything together by producing an independent dissertation on a topic you care about. Alongside this, you’ll choose from a wide range of specialist modules such as Chinese Politics, Decolonising Human Rights, Gender, War & Militarism, or Elections and Voters in Britain. This is your opportunity to focus on the areas that match your career goals or academic passions.

  • Learn by doing – instead of only traditional essays, you’ll write policy briefs, produce podcasts, create blogs, prepare presentations, and even carry out field reports.

  • Join a thriving community – take part in the annual undergraduate conference, contribute to the student-run Politics journal, and attend the School’s seminar series where leading thinkers share their work.

  • Boost your career prospects – past students have secured Q-Step summer placements and internships, gaining real-world experience in policy, data analysis, and research.

  • Go global – the course offers study abroad opportunities that let you experience politics in different countries and cultures first-hand.

  • Tap into world-class research – you’ll be surrounded by specialist centres like the Manchester International Law Centre and the Political Economy Centre, where cutting-edge ideas are debated every day.

  • Study in inspiring spaces – from the University’s main library, one of only five National Research Libraries in the UK, to the historic John Rylands Library, you’ll have access to resources that few students in the world can match.

  • Get involved outside class – many students volunteer or take part in community projects across Manchester, applying what they learn to make a difference beyond campus.
