Politics and International Relations BA

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Nottingham

Program Overview

If you want to truly understand how politics shapes our world — from local government decisions to major international crises — this degree is designed for you. The course combines the study of political ideas, institutions, and global challenges, giving you the tools to debate, analyse, and influence the issues that matter most today.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll start by building a strong foundation in political thought and global politics. Core modules like Introduction to Political Theory and Political Theory in Practice introduce you to the big ideas that still influence modern politics. Alongside these, classes such as Problems in Global Politics and Understanding Global Politics help you see how theory meets reality, tackling questions of conflict, power, and cooperation. You can also choose options like British Constitution in Crisis or International Politics of the Asia-Pacific to begin tailoring your learning.

Year 2
In your second year, you’ll move beyond the basics and begin shaping your own path. Modules such as Global Security and International Political Economy and Global Development let you explore real-world issues like terrorism, war, inequality, and the politics of trade. You might also study How Voters Decide or Politics and Public Policy in China, which help you understand democracy and policy-making in different contexts. This is the stage where you’ll sharpen your research and analytical skills, learning to back up your arguments with evidence and data.

Year 3
Your final year is about applying everything you’ve learned at an advanced level. You’ll have the chance to write a Dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about — whether that’s human rights, intelligence and security, or the politics of global crises. Specialist options such as China in Global Politics, Race and Politics, or Political Parties and Party Systems Around the Globe let you dig deeper into areas that interest you most. By the time you graduate, you’ll be confident in tackling complex debates, using data effectively, and communicating ideas clearly.
