Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Psychology degree is a three-year program designed to provide you with a strong foundation in psychology and a competitive edge in your professional career. In the early stages of the course, you’ll explore core areas of psychology, such as biological and social psychology, cognitive and developmental psychology, individual differences, and research methods. As you advance, the program offers the flexibility to focus on areas that align with your personal and professional goals through a range of optional modules. These modules reflect the diverse research expertise of the academic staff and are designed to support you in developing the analytical, practical, and critical thinking skills essential for a wide range of careers in psychology and related fields.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Newcastle takes practical learning seriously—it’s not just lectures.   • Research-informed teaching starts early: in Stage 1, you learn research methods and data analysis; by Stage 3 you’ll design and conduct your own empirical project (30 credits), guided by staff who are active in internationally recognised research

  • You can apply to do a work placement or a year abroad (between Stages 2 and 3), extending your degree by a year. These are fully supported by the School's placement and mobility teams, and an impressive list of international partner universities is available, including institutions in the US, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Singapore and more
