This course is ideal for students interested in understanding human behaviour, communication, and cognition while building strong research and analytical skills.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
In the first year, you develop a foundation in psychology and language sciences. You will study modules such as Perception, Attention and Learning, Memory, and Introduction to Speech Science, alongside Introduction to Statistical Methods and Evidence and Enquiry in Psychology. You will also explore Neural Basis of Perception, Memory and Language and Social Psychology and Individual Differences, helping you understand behaviour from biological, cognitive, and social perspectives.

Year 2
During the second year, you deepen your understanding of communication and cognition. Core modules include Development of Communication and Cognition, Language and Cognition, and Science of Bias, supported by Intermediate Statistical Methods and Qualitative and Mixed Research Methods. You can also choose options such as Language and Communication or The Human Voice: Speech, Emotions, Identity, and may take part in a weekly observational placement in early years settings.

Year 3
In the final year, you specialise according to your interests and career goals. This final year focuses on independent research and advanced knowledge across psychology and language sciences.

Focus areas: cognitive psychology, language development, speech science, linguistics, communication, social psychology, neuroscience of language, developmental psychology, research methods, psycholinguistics

Learning outcomes: understanding human communication and cognition, applying psychological research methods, analysing behaviour using scientific approaches, conducting independent research, interpreting statistical and qualitative data, developing critical thinking and communication skills

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), providing eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the required degree classification.

Reputation (employability rankings): UCL is ranked among the world’s top universities for psychology in QS World University Rankings by Subject, and graduates progress into employment or further study shortly after completing the degree.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students on this programme develop practical skills by working directly with psychological research, language studies, and communication analysis rather than only learning theory. Teaching is closely connected to ongoing research at UCL, so you regularly engage with real studies in cognition, speech, and human behaviour. Alongside lectures, you build hands-on experience through labs, observational work, and structured research training using professional tools and datasets.

Experiential learning in this programme is built around research facilities, field-based observation, digital tools, and specialist academic resources:

  • Access to UCL psychology and language sciences research laboratories for experiments in cognition, speech, perception, and behaviour

  • Training in research and statistical tools used in psychology, including data analysis software such as R

  • Optional weekly observational placement in early years settings to study communication, learning, and child development in real environments

  • Direct involvement in supervised research projects guided by academic experts in psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience

  • Use of UCL’s online learning platform for accessing lecture materials, datasets, recordings, and research resources

  • Access to specialist language and speech science resources within UCL’s academic library system

  • Participation in research seminars, academic talks, and psychology-related student societies for deeper subject engagement

  • Small-group lab sessions focused on experimental design, data interpretation, and communication research methods

Overall, the programme is designed to help you apply theory in real research environments while building strong analytical and practical skills for future academic or professional pathways.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this programme develop strong skills in psychology, language, cognition, and research, which prepare them for careers in both scientific and applied fields. Many move into roles that involve understanding human behaviour, communication, and data, while others continue into advanced professional training or postgraduate study.

Typical graduate roles include: clinical psychology assistant, speech and language therapy assistant, educational psychology assistant, research analyst, data analyst, cognitive science researcher, UX research roles, education support roles, and positions in policy or behavioural research.

Career support and outcomes:

  • UCL Careers service offers personalised guidance including CV support, interview preparation, and career planning sessions

  • Opportunities to connect with employers through networking events, career fairs, and industry talks

  • Strong graduate outcomes, with a high proportion of students progressing into employment or further study shortly after graduation

  • British Psychological Society accreditation supports eligibility for further professional psychology training routes

  • Access to UCL’s wider academic and professional network across healthcare, research, education, and industry sectors

Further Academic Progression:
After completing this degree, students often continue into Master’s programmes such as Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Speech and Language Therapy, Data Science, Linguistics, or Educational Psychology. Some also pursue research degrees like MRes or PhD, especially in psychology, neuroscience, or language sciences, supported by UCL’s strong research-focused environment.
