Program Overview

If you're curious about human behavior and our role in the world, studying psychology at Essex offers a dynamic and impactful experience. Our program goes beyond traditional teaching by focusing on real-world societal challenges, giving you the tools and insight to contribute meaningfully to society.

At Essex, you’ll learn from internationally respected researchers who are pushing the boundaries of psychological science. We adopt a multidisciplinary, multi-method approach, encouraging you to explore diverse perspectives and advanced techniques. You’ll tackle fascinating questions such as:

  • How do social relationships form and break down, and how can they be improved?

  • What long-term effects do early parenting decisions have on child development?

  • How does culture shape our thoughts, personality, and group interactions?

From your very first year, you'll explore core psychological concepts through topical and societal themes. Research methods and statistical skills are taught within the context of these themes, helping you grasp complex ideas through relevant, real-life topics. Subjects are taught individually to deepen understanding and help you consolidate your knowledge.

As you move into your second year, you’ll delve further into specialized areas like brain and behaviour, and health psychology. In your final year, you can tailor your studies by choosing from modules that match your interests. You’ll also have the chance to take applied modules across your studies in areas such as health, sustainability, global challenges, and criminal psychology—equipping you with practical knowledge and skills for real-world applications in psychology.
