BA Psychology Experimental

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Oxford

Program Overview

The Experimental Psychology course at the University of Oxford is a rigorous, science-based program that explores a wide range of questions concerning mental life and human behaviour. It investigates how we perceive and interact with the world, how language is acquired, what underlies social relationships, and the causes of psychological disorders such as schizophrenia. Unlike more introspective approaches, Oxford’s psychology program emphasises empirical research through experiments and systematic observation.

Recognised as one of the UK's top psychology departments, Oxford’s Experimental Psychology Department offers exceptional teaching and research opportunities. Students benefit from a rich academic environment that hosts multiple research seminars weekly, alongside lectures and tutorials. The department is particularly strong in areas such as cognitive psychology, neuroscience, developmental and social psychology, and mental health.

Students have the option to graduate with a BA after three years, or continue into a fourth year to pursue a Master’s degree in Experimental Psychology, focused on research, clinical applications, or translational projects. The course structure enables students to engage with independent research from the third year onward, often in collaboration with other departments or external institutions.

Oxford’s psychology students also enjoy access to cutting-edge laboratories and facilities, and close academic links with neuroscience, philosophy, and linguistics. As one of the UK's most active research hubs with a global reputation, the department offers a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in high-level psychological research, supported by leading experts in the field.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Laboratory Experience
Throughout the degree, students participate in lab-based modules where they learn experimental methods, behavioural testing, cognitive neuroscience techniques, and data analysis using statistical software like R. These practicals develop technical competence in psychological research methodology.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaborations
Students often collaborate with departments such as Neuroscience, Philosophy, and Linguistics. These cross-disciplinary experiences enrich the student’s perspective and provide opportunities to work on integrated projects involving brain imaging, computational modelling, or language processing.

  • Research Assistantships
Exceptional students may be invited to work as research assistants on ongoing faculty projects. This provides in-depth exposure to the research process, from literature reviews to lab work and data management, and is ideal preparation for postgraduate study.

  • Seminar Participation
The department hosts weekly seminars featuring leading researchers. Students are encouraged to attend and engage in discussions, gaining exposure to cutting-edge developments and the opportunity to network with academics and postdoctoral researchers.

  • Summer Research Placements
Students can apply for summer internships within Oxford or through external organisations. These placements offer hands-on experience in research labs, often involving work in fields like social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or developmental psychology.

  • Clinical Shadowing and Volunteering
Though not a formal requirement, students may gain clinical exposure through volunteering or shadowing professionals in mental health settings. This experience is particularly valuable for students interested in clinical psychology or healthcare careers.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Oxford Experimental Psychology graduates have very good career opportunities. Six months after graduation, 80–90% are in what is considered graduate-level employment. The types of jobs are diverse, ranging from research through to education, healthcare, consultancy, and many more. Starting salaries are also not bad—typically ranging from around £35,700 to more than £41,600 for those employed postgraduate-level.
