Program Overview

If you’re passionate about global issues, diplomacy, and understanding how countries interact, Swansea University’s BA International Relations with a Foundation Year is the perfect place to start. This four-year degree is ideal for students who want to build their confidence and academic skills before diving into the fascinating world of international relations — from conflict and security to global justice and human rights.

 Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year – Building your academic foundations

Your journey begins with a foundation year designed to prepare you for degree-level study. You’ll develop key skills in critical thinking, academic writing, and research methods through modules like Critical Reflection and Problem Solving and Introduction to Being Human. This year is all about building confidence, sharpening your study skills, and exploring core ideas in the social sciences.

Year 1 – Understanding the global stage

In your first year of the degree, you’ll explore the fundamental ideas and theories that shape international relations. Modules such as War and Peace in the Nuclear Age, Critical Reasoning, Political Philosophy, and Living Well and Doing Good – An Introduction to Ethics will help you understand how global systems operate, how power is exercised, and how ethical decisions shape international policies.

Year 2 – Deepening your global perspective

Your second year takes you deeper into the complexities of world politics. You’ll study key topics like Anarchy and Order: Theories in International Relations, Globalisation, Global Justice and Human Rights, and International Security. Optional modules such as The Colour Line: Race and Racism in World Politics allow you to tailor your studies to issues that matter most to you. By the end of this year, you’ll be able to connect theory with real-world events and debates.

Year 3 – Specialising and applying your knowledge

In your final year, you’ll put everything you’ve learned into practice. You’ll conduct independent research by writing a dissertation on a topic you’re passionate about, or you can choose a placement module with the Senedd Cymru (Welsh Parliament) to gain real-world experience. You’ll also have the chance to explore specialist modules like Capitalism and Justice, Global Environmental Politics, America and Terrorism, Digital Futures, or Africa in International Relations, helping you shape your degree around your future goals.
