Politics and Social Policy BA

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Birmingham

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how governments make decisions and how those decisions affect people’s lives, this program is a perfect fit. The Politics and Social Policy BA blends two powerful disciplines, giving you the tools to understand political systems while also exploring the real social challenges they aim to solve.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your journey begins with the essentials. You’ll study modules such as Understanding Politics, Introduction to Political Theory, and Introduction to Social Policy alongside courses like Social Divisions and Social Problems and Social Policy. At the same time, you’ll start developing strong research skills through Pathways to Political Research, which will prepare you for deeper analysis later on.

Year 2
In your second year, the program moves into more advanced debates and real-world applications. You’ll explore topics like Comparative Politics and Social Research, while also shaping your own path with optional modules that match your interests. You’ll learn to critically assess how policies are created and what impact they have, strengthening both your analytical and practical skills.

Year 3
Your final year is about specialisation and independence. You can take on a Dissertation project in Politics or Social Policy, allowing you to dive into a topic you’re truly passionate about. Or, if you’d rather explore different areas, you can choose from a wide range of modules such as International Negotiation, The Politics of Gender, Sex and Sexuality, or Drugs: Society, Politics and Policy. This is where you bring everything together and shape your own academic story.

From day one, you’ll be encouraged to apply ideas, test your skills, and get involved in opportunities that make your degree feel alive and practical.

You’ll take part in activities like Model NATO, where you step into the shoes of diplomats to tackle global crises in real-time.
