University of Birmingham

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about making a difference in society and want to understand how governments, policies and social systems shape people’s lives, this degree is designed for you. The BA Politics and Social Policy with Year Abroad combines political thinking with real-world social policy, preparing you to tackle major issues like inequality, healthcare, education, and social justice on a global scale.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Your Foundation
Your first year gives you a strong introduction to both disciplines, exploring how societies are structured and governed. Through modules like Introduction to Social Policy, Philosophies of Welfare, Introduction to Social Divisions and Social Problems and Social Policy: Social Science in Action, you’ll examine how policies are created, why they matter, and how they impact different groups. You’ll also develop essential research and analytical skills that will support your studies in later years.

Year 2 – Deepening Your Knowledge
In second year, you’ll explore politics and policy in more depth and from an international perspective. Modules such as Comparative Social Policy, Managing Health and Social Care, Media and Society, and Terror, Threat and Security challenge you to think critically about how different countries design and deliver social policies, how media shapes public opinion, and how political institutions respond to global threats. By the end of the year, you’ll have a more sophisticated understanding of how politics and policy interact in the real world.

Year 3 – Expanding Your Horizons Abroad
Your third year is an exciting opportunity to study at one of the University’s partner institutions overseas. Living and learning in a new country gives you fresh insights into political systems and social policies, helping you develop a truly global perspective. You’ll continue studying related subjects in a different context while building valuable skills like adaptability, cross-cultural communication, and independence.

Year 4 – Specialising and Creating Impact
In your final year, you’ll bring everything together by engaging with advanced ideas and completing your own research project. Modules such as Contemporary Social Theory, Technology and Society, Crime and the City, and New Migration and Super-diversity explore cutting-edge debates in politics and social policy. You’ll also complete a dissertation on a topic you care about, showcasing your ability to think critically, conduct research, and contribute original ideas to the field.
