BA (Hons) Filmmaking (with Foundation Year)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Central Lancashire

Program Overview

The BA (Hons) Filmmaking with Foundation Year at UCLan is a four-year, practical degree designed for anyone passionate about film in all its forms — from directing and production to screenwriting and post-production. The foundation year offers a perfect introduction, giving you the creative and technical grounding you need before moving into advanced filmmaking studies. It’s ideal if you want to build confidence, experiment with film techniques, and prepare for a career in the independent film or wider media industries.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year
In your foundation year, you’ll explore different creative specialisms and learn essential technical skills through modules like Introduction to Specialisms (AZC017) and Specialisms (AZC018). This year focuses on experimentation — helping you develop core creative and media practices that set you up for success in the main degree.

Year 1 (Level 4)
Your first full year introduces you to key aspects of film and media. In Film, Television and Media Culture (MF1601), you’ll study how media forms shape audiences and storytelling. Production Skills (MF1602) gives you hands-on experience with single-camera techniques, editing, and post-production. Meanwhile, Scripts, Treatments & Pitching (MF1604) helps you turn your ideas into compelling stories and confidently pitch your creative concepts.

Year 2 (Level 5)
You’ll begin refining your creative voice and professional skills. Thinking Through Film, Media and TV (MF2601) deepens your understanding of film as a cultural and intellectual form. Filmmaking: Advanced Production Skills (MF2603) enhances your abilities across camera, sound, lighting, and post-production. You’ll also explore the business side of creativity in The Creative Entrepreneur (MF2605) — learning how to turn your ideas into viable projects or even launch your own production company.

Year 3 (Level 6 / Honours Year)
Your final year is all about independence and mastery. In Filmmaking Specialist Practice (MF3601), you’ll research, plan, and produce your own short film using advanced professional techniques. Project Proposal (MF3603) prepares you to pitch and develop your major project, while Dissertation (MF3604) lets you dive deep into a film or media topic of your choice.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

If you’re looking for a creative, hands-on route into the world of film, the BA (Hons) Filmmaking (with Foundation Year) at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) could be the perfect fit for you.

From the very first day, you’ll be learning by doing—building practical filmmaking skills in real production environments. You’ll use professional equipment, work collaboratively on real projects, and explore everything from narrative and documentary to short and feature films. At UCLan, filmmaking isn’t just something you study—it’s something you live and create every day.

Experiential Learning and Facilities

You’ll have access to UCLan’s purpose-built Media Factory, home to state-of-the-art facilities including dedicated edit suites, a Foley sound studio, a sound stage with greenscreen and motion-capture technology, plus fully equipped TV and photography studios.

You’ll receive hands-on technical training, learning to operate professional single-camera and audio-visual equipment while understanding every stage of production—from pre-production planning to post-production editing.

Throughout the course, you’ll create work across a variety of formats—narrative films, documentaries, independent shorts and feature films—giving you a rich, diverse portfolio.

Your learning will be guided by a team of experienced industry professionals—editors, producers, animators, sound designers and VFX artists—who bring valuable real-world insights into workshops and tutorials.

Every studio and piece of equipment is designed to replicate industry conditions, so you’re developing your craft in a professional environment rather than just a classroom.

What You’ll Actually Do

  • Work in small groups and individually on real filmmaking projects that simulate industry production—from pitching and scripting to shooting and editing.

  • Use professional software and technology, including edit suites, sound-recording booths, motion-capture systems, and green-screen setups.

  • Take part in creative workshops, screenings and tutorials, gaining feedback and learning through hands-on practice rather than traditional lectures.

  • Benefit from the School of Arts & Media’s strong industry links, which open up opportunities for placements, collaborations and live client projects.

  • Start with a Foundation Year, where you’ll build core study skills, explore creative specialisms and develop your confidence before progressing into the full honours degree.
