History of Art examines the wide range of things that humanity has made and looked at and endowed with meaning - from the imposing facade of an imperial palace, to the colorful glory of stained glass or oil painting, to an artist's intimate sketches. The discipline encompasses the study of painting, sculpture, the graphic media, and architecture, as well as an extensive variety of visual forms produced for purposes that run far afield of the traditional territory of "art" itself (advertising, say, or ritual and ceremony, or popular entertainment).

Profile Assessment: Creative-field applicants may be assessed through academic preparation, creative ability, visual thinking and, where required, a portfolio. The portfolio may include finished work as well as sketches, experimentation, process development and written explanations. Architecture may value Mathematics, Physics, drawing and spatial thinking, while Art, Design and Fashion programs may place greater emphasis on originality, technical development and the creative process.Advanced Placement(AP) Guidance: AP availability depends on the student's school. Relevant APs can strengthen an application and may earn university credit, but are not compulsory unless the university or programme explicitly requires them.Extracurricular activities: Estimated extracurricular contribution: 20–30%. Michigan values leadership, sustained involvement, service, initiative and evidence of potential contribution to the university community.
