University of Michigan Background
The University of Michigan frequently referred to simply ‘Michigan’ is a public research university founded in 1817 as University of Michigania. It was renamed to the University of Michigan in 1821. Though presently it is located in Ann Arbor, originally it was founded in Detroit. The first commencement was held in 1845 to recognize the graduation of 11 students. Over the years the university has grown and includes 19 colleges and schools like Medical school (established in 1850), Law school (established in 1859), Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning (established in 1931), Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy (established in 1995) to name a few.

The University has the largest college football stadium in the nation and one of the largest football-only stadiums in the world. The men's basketball team has most recently won back to back Big Ten Tournament Championships against Wisconsin in 2017 and Purdue in 2018. The University of Michigan acceptance rate is 28.6% for the year 2016.
