The Stamps BFA program focuses on creativity: critical thinking, project development, community engagement and collaboration, as well as mastery of technique and craftsmanship. In addition to studio coursework, students have the opportunity to take part in and integrate the wide range of areas of study available at the University of Michigan.
During the first year, students complete a foundation of studio courses and begin to explore their academic interests. In the second year, students begin taking elective studio courses and continue to pursue academic courses beyond the Stamps School, and are encouraged to make interdisciplinary connections that will inform their work for the next three years. Year three and four are extraordinarily flexible, as students continue with elective studios and interdisciplinary courses outside of the Stamps School, culminating with advanced, 400-level studio work.
US universities use a holistic admissions review. Beyond grades and standardized test scores, they weigh the strength of your overall profile to understand who you are as a student and a person.
Profile Assessment: Creative-field applicants may be assessed through academic preparation, creative ability, visual thinking and, where required, a portfolio. The portfolio may include finished work as well as sketches, experimentation, process development and written explanations. Architecture may value Mathematics, Physics, drawing and spatial thinking, while Art, Design and Fashion programs may place greater emphasis on originality, technical development and the creative process.Advanced Placement(AP) Guidance: AP availability depends on the student's school. Relevant APs can strengthen an application and may earn university credit, but are not compulsory unless the university or programme explicitly requires them.Extracurricular activities: Estimated extracurricular contribution: 20–30%. Michigan values leadership, sustained involvement, service, initiative and evidence of potential contribution to the university community.
