The Department of Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) gives students a strong grasp of historical, cultural, and practical contexts in which live performance develops. With close faculty contact, department majors pursue areas of interest that may include acting, directing, writing, dance, devised theater, design, stage management, performance theory, and cultural studies.

Extracurricular activities: Estimated extracurricular contribution: 20–30%. Stanford looks for depth, intellectual vitality, initiative and meaningful impact. A student who has developed one or two interests to a high level may present a stronger profile than someone with many superficial activities. Projects, leadership, research, entrepreneurship, arts, sport and community work can all be valuable.Profile Assessment: Creative-field applicants may be assessed through academic preparation, creative ability, visual thinking and, where required, a portfolio. The portfolio may include finished work as well as sketches, experimentation, process development and written explanations. Architecture may value Mathematics, Physics, drawing and spatial thinking, while Art, Design and Fashion programs may place greater emphasis on originality, technical development and the creative process.Advanced Placement(AP) Guidance: AP availability depends on the student's school.
