Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Business at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is designed for students who want to combine business strategy and management with technology, analytics and hands-on problem solving. The flexible program lets students build a broad business foundation and specialize in Business Analytics, Financial Technology, General Business or Innovation for Social Change while developing practical skills through WPI's project-based learning model.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Quantitative and Technical Foundation: Students begin developing the analytical foundation needed for modern business through subjects such as MA 1021 Calculus I, MA 1022 Calculus II and a programming course such as CS 1004 Introduction to Programming for Non-Majors. Alongside mathematics, computer science and basic science requirements, students begin developing the quantitative and technology skills that support later business decision-making.

Year 2 – Business Foundations: Students move deeper into core business concepts through courses such as ACC 2060 Financial Statements for Decision Making, BUS 1020 Global Environment of Business Decisions and BUS 2080 Data Analysis for Decision Making. The curriculum also introduces risk, innovation, leadership and operations through courses such as FIN 2070 Risk Analysis for Decision Making, MIS 3010 Creating Value Through Innovation and OIE 3020 Achieving Effective Operations.

Year 3 – Business Strategy and Specialization: Students strengthen their understanding of how different business functions work together through courses including BUS 2020 The Legal Environment of Business Decisions, MKT 4030 Marketing Strategy and OBC 1010 Leadership Practice. Students also begin concentrating their studies in areas such as Business Analytics, Financial Technology, General Business or Innovation for Social Change, allowing them to align their coursework with their professional interests.

Year 4 – Advanced Study and Major Qualifying Project: In the final stage, students complete advanced concentration coursework and breadth electives while applying their knowledge to a Business Major Qualifying Project (MQP) focused on their chosen concentration. The MQP is completed with an advisor from the Business School and gives students an opportunity to integrate business theory, technology, analytical reasoning and teamwork into a substantial project.

  • Major Qualifying Project (MQP): Students complete a three-unit Business MQP focused on their chosen concentration with an advisor from the WPI Business School.

  • Industry projects: Business students have worked on real projects involving sustainable business models, online marketing and ordering platforms, environmental data mapping, stock-market simulations, ROI analysis and healthcare data dashboards.
