Bachelor's in International Business

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Illinois State University

Program Overview

Illinois State University’s International Business program prepares students to understand how businesses operate across countries, cultures, and international markets. Combining business fundamentals, foreign language study, international business courses, and a concentration in areas such as Marketing, Finance, Management, Accountancy, or Business Information Systems, the program helps students develop the knowledge and cultural awareness needed to pursue careers in multinational companies, government agencies, and globally connected organizations.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Business Foundations

Students begin by developing a strong understanding of business, economics, mathematics, communication, and general education. Courses such as Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, and Principles of Economics help students understand how organizations manage finances, make decisions, and respond to economic conditions. Students also begin fulfilling the foreign language requirement, establishing the foundation for international business study.

Year 2 – Developing International Business Knowledge

Students progress into business and international-focused subjects that introduce the complexities of operating across national boundaries. International Business (IB 225) provides exposure to global business environments, while courses in business functions and language study strengthen students' understanding of international markets, communication, and organizational practices. Students also begin exploring their functional concentration and international electives.

Year 3 – Specialization and Global Experience

Students deepen their expertise through advanced business courses and a chosen concentration in Marketing, Finance, Insurance, Management, Business Information Systems, or Accountancy. Internationally focused coursework, area studies, and the required international experience help students understand how cultural, political, economic, and legal differences influence business decisions. Students complete at least one month abroad through study abroad or an international internship, subject to the program's approved exemption process.

Year 4 – Advanced Business Application and Career Preparation

In the final year, students complete upper-level business requirements, concentration courses, international electives, and remaining degree requirements. Students bring together their business knowledge, language skills, and cultural understanding to prepare for roles involving global operations, international markets, financial activities, and cross-border business relationships. The program requires at least 120 total credit hours for graduation.
